Down the rabbit hole -- whiney rant

Postby toprob » Fri Dec 06, 2024 11:15 am

This week I've been getting to the stage where I can think of MSFS2024 as my main sim. I do have a lot of simulators, but most just gather dust unless I need to load them for a specific purpose. Today I loaded Prepar3d v6 for the first time in a while, as well as 2020, just to look at the NZ vegetation. But 2024 surpasses everything just enough to make it my go-to. Still, lots of issues, some of these will be fixed over time by the developers, a few by third parties.

I spent a bit of time yesterday on the official MSFS forum. Mainly because I watched the developer live stream, and I realised how much they must rely on user votes for various issues and fixes, so I thought I'd vote for a few things which are important to me. Like beards -- why can't my avatar have a beard?!!

The 'community' on the official forum isn't quite the mess that we see on other user sites, but it is still up there. One thing I've realised is that I don't really know what people actually mean when they post some stuff, and it suddenly struck me that I am a typical autistic -- I take things very much at face value. So if someone creates a post headed 'There are the things which MS/the developers whatever MUST do to make amends' it takes me a while to realise that this isn't really what they mean. Obviously MS doesn't NEED to do any of these things, and probably won't. There have been calls for MS to shut down 2024, for the developers to all be sacked or fall on their swords. Then the thread splits into two camps, neither ever getting closer to understanding the other. I don't really believe that either side truly believes what they post, they just need to blow off steam.

What I would like ("I demand! They must do this immediately!! What NEEEEEDs to be done!!!") is that every poster should tag their post from a list:

  • Constructive criticism;
  • Non-constructive criticism;
  • Positive feedback;
  • Negative feedback;
  • Whiney baby rant.

Then I can just filter the posts based on this tag. By excluding the whiney baby rants I could get through the thread a lot quicker. I did ask a couple of posters which age group they fall into, as I wanted to figure out what would make a person behave the way that we see sometimes. So far nobody has answered me. The thought that some people may get to my age and still have no clue how video games or the free market work really scares me.

To me, these whiney posts are similar to the click-bait Youtube videos, which account for 97.5% of flightsim videos -- "Do this NOW!"; "The answer to your FPS problems!"; "What went so horribly wrong?" Or all the 'creators' who simply parrot what MS have said -- a 15 minute video which says less than a short paragraph? No thanks. How are we meant to find the real creators? Well, there are so few that it probably isn't worth the bother looking. I counted my flightsim-related subscriptions on Youtube, and out of the hundreds, there are two, and one of them is MS. (The other is twotonemurphy, who is at least entertaining, actually reviews some stuff, give a lively news recap, and then after a couple of hours actually goes for a flight along with his followers.)

[End rant]

Well Rob that was quite the wee rant wasn't it ? :D
Just kidding, I think you hit the nail on the head. I agree with everything you have observed.
I still think NZ cities that don't have a compatible update yet are spoilt by all those dam trees.
No good setting it to low trees cos that only effects the quality not the quantity.
Why did they not fix the aircraft trim wheel operating arse about face on all the aircraft I tried.
I do have a trim wheel so could program it correctly. Having the keyboard with so much tied to it
has lost them a lot of customers. The die hard ones, gulp, are just going to figure out one way or another.
The problem for me is I haven't got a great deal of time left on the planet so to speak.
The memory is not too crash hot either. I am determined to give it a fair crack of the whip no matter what.
I am not going to uninstall MSFS2020 as I do feel that NZ needs a lot of work in MSFS2024 not the least
being decade old photogrammetry. In some other parts of the world MSFS2024 is really good and I will be
happy to use it. Now, where did I put that bucket of Sand. :unsure:

I did think I'd had some sort of psychotic break the first time this happened.

On one thread I actually used this as a reason why I pre-purchased the new sim, after all there are only so many new sims I'll get to try at my age.
I'll check back in a decade and see how we both are doing.

I think it sums up my day.

I've stayed off most of the flight simulation forums for years now (this one an exception of course!) but I have to admit I do browse and occasionally post on the main MSFS Reddit, and while a lot of people there are understandably frustrated with many of the issues FS2024 has, and others are quite happy with the sim, there are some who are just plain petty. It amazes me that people are complaining that their house looks melted or their neighbour's swimming pool doesn't show up as water or whatever. I think these people need to take a step back and realise this is a flight simulator. The fact you can legitimately find your own house in it is incredible in its own right. That's my own opinion anyway.
