It would be interesting to see some real v sim shots of the same route, same time etc, esp when there’s some weather around.

Yeah this could be good, let’s look at our rosters and tee it up some time. Just don’t make it a CHC-ROT length one!

I see Orbx have announced a 10m terrain mesh enhancement for NZ that is due to come out later this week: http://orbx.to/nzmesh

Preview screens look awesome already, with future 1m mesh for urban areas planned. Reckon this might be a game changer for MSFS!

Nice. What is the default mesh out of interest?

Hmm interesting. Wonder whether Asobo will release their own mesh enhancement with a world update? What about airports. Wonder whether they will be affected?

Yeah I wonder how they did that. There’s no offical DEM processing tool out yet, so hopefully they’re not profiting off a beta version. A bit unfair as all the data’s free.

There’s a couple of open source tools floating around which is pretty cool to see. One where the guy has reversed engineered the cgl files and interpreted the data format. From what I read that had issues which mesh resolution higher than 30m though. This may have changed.
And another that would be more suitable for small areas which can do high resolution.

Looks like it was released yesterday to grabbed the download through Orbx Central this morning. To my eye it looks pretty similar to default (guessing the native mesh res might be around 20m maybe?), although there is a noticeable lack of water climbing around steep coastal areas, and the shape of the terrain remains consistently sharp rather than popping in and out of lower LODs from a distance which makes for a much more immersive experience that default.

The Holgermesh that came with Orbx's NZNI/NZSI in the FSX and P3D days was only ever 10m res, so I'm happy that virtual NZ inside of MSFS at least looks as good as it has done in the past.

Yes I have seen them but the changes didn't seem significantly different.

Yeah I agree...l am worried about the affect it has on the airports as well.... been there done that in FSX AND P3d. Will wait for an Asobo update...but I guess that may also affect airport add ons.

I'm going to hold off for an update from Asobo too, not sure if they've actually said anything but I'm reasonably confident NZ will be on their roadmap of updates somewhere given its such a popular place to fly and a relatively small area to cover. Or, failing that the more detailed mesh Orbx are alluding to for the future. This looks good but not enough of an improvement over the default to justify the potential problems in my opinion. Right now I'm having a ton of fun exploring the UK which looks great with the Asobo update for it.

When I get into my new home and *if* I can convince the wife, I'm hoping to get back into sim, but if my PC can handle it I'd like to consider VR this time.
