Installing FSX Gold in Win10

Postby Pato » Sat Sep 10, 2016 4:33 pm

Has anyone successfully installed FSX in Win10?. I am having some difficulty. I ran Disk 1 and had to navigate to fsx.exe to start the programme.

I get a Window "FS cannot run because the version of MS Directx (R) installed on your computer is incompatible. Please reinstall Directx 9.0 by running FS setup,

or download the current version from http://www.microsoft.com/direxctx" Not sure which version to install or where I should install it.?

Anyone else had this problem and may be able to assist thanks.

Mine was already installed when WIN10 decided to do its thing , Since you had it previously installed have you tried the 'Repair Install' ?

I had it previously installed
in Win7 before upgrading to Win10. Unfortunately I lost my HDD and Win7 backup so I have to start from scratch again. Not going to get very far if I can't get FSX to install.

EDIT: Hello Doug ..

The file you are thinking of is Classic Shell it doesn't let WIN10 operate like win 7 it only lets you changes your Start and other folders of your choice to look like either WINXP, WIN7 or VISTA

Yes, I had to get a new drive and reinstall windows 10, FSX and P3D. All installed just fine so I'm not sure what has happened with your installation. Anyway, I guess that doing a separate install of DX9 should fix your problem. I'm pretty sure that DX9 is supposed to be installed when you install FSX but maybe windows 10 checks and sees that there is a later version so doesn't properly install the DX9 drivers.

Follow Doug's link and install from there

Finally managed to install FSX and activated it ok, but when I installed acceleration it didn't give me the option to Activate. I now get a "Product
Activation Error code: 1-80004005" each time I start FSX. Did a google search and it looks like it is a fairly frequent problem. I note that it may be fixed by going into the registry but that always
scares me. LOL.

Well I am wondering that as I proceed with Win10, sometimes I wish I had never loaded Win10. Unfortunately I was unable to go back to Win7 after a fresh install and the loss of my backup. I have had trouble with some other programs that ran perfectly in Win7 but not in Win10. Makes life interesting I guess.

These issues are more to do with the way that older games were installed, rather than problems with the operating system. In reality, the OS gets better and better, but when some favourite old features get removed, people blame the OS. I have a few grizzles about Windows 10 myself, but only because it has simplified things to the extent that some features I used in the past are no longer included, but overall I'm well-aware that it's a lot safer and cleaner than anything before.

The simple solution for Flight Simulator is to run a more modern version -- either Prepar3d or FSX Steam. FSX-se is currently NZ$30, but it is sometimes cheaper. Sure, it would be nice to install from our bought-and-paid-for discs, but it's a lot simpler to buy a version which just runs.

The biggest thing with all the statements and problem above and .. IF I STARTED ADDING UP THE AMOUNT OF DOLLARS I now own and even the very latest ... Example : My Aerosoft F-14X .. ... How many thousands of people have brought products that now are DEAD ... and are going to complain , ya then wonder why people even continue wanting it , again add another dorky OS then it trucks every up .. spray and wipe "I WALK AWAY"

I am a bit out of touch with the latest programs. I know a little about Prepar3d but don't know anything about FSX Steam. I would certainly have not problems purchasing it and that will probably solve the problems. I like Win10 but it has given me problems with some of my programs, but I am slowly sorting them out. Will my previously purchased scenery etc work with FSX Steam.?

I brought FSX Steam as a backup, Five Dollar Special , I can't see any reason why it should not work with addons , think this is one area I'd want to make sure payware aircraft would , I'm guessing scenery would simply plop and play.

I would certainly want to be sure that addons work with Steam. I had better do some research on Steam to see how if differs from FSX Gold.

I think if I had to go to FSX Steam and things don't work, I'd get the/some of the required aircraft working on this PC copy the files and go that way , I have FSX on three PC's so already thinking in that area .. Scenery tho should simply just 'plop and play'.
