Gliding in P3D

Postby Adamski » Fri Jul 01, 2016 4:45 pm

I managed to dust off my ancient Aerosoft Discus to find that it seems to work great in P3Dv3 - so long as you start your flight with some other powered up aircraft first. This activates the main battery for the LCD variometer.

Also (surprisingly) the freeware WinchX works in P3D. If you can't be bothered with that, CTL-SHF-Y will call up a default Maule which will tow you up to 6,000ft - in a straight line from the current runway.

Take off tow with the default Maule:

After landing out - come and pick me up, please!!!

Gliders!

Lovely Pics!

Recommended training for every would-be powered aircraft Pilot!

I prefer to be closer to the ground, on my bike, when "altitude" problems occur.... ...!

I solo'd in gliders many moons ago - but haven't been able to afford to do much since. I have to say, though, that I felt infinitely safer in a glider than any powered aircraft (and don't dare mention egg-beaters!). Usually - without any input from the [idiot] pilot, they will just "fly". The only problem (as you hint at) is where do you put it when the altimeter reads <100ft AGL? Not much of an option around Mount Cook itself - if you can't get back to "the flat green bits" around NZMC.

There's a great video that I once had - about father and son trying glide the length of Miford Sound (and the passes leading up to it, I think). They had a backup landing plan in place for every single yard of the trip. Sadly, they reckoned they just couldn't *quite* make the very last hurdle, so had to go back to Plan B. Both reckoned they had a fair chance of making it, but safety prevailed!

I have a great anecdote: In my gliding days in Gloucestershire (plenty of flat fields but loads of really beautiful, steep valleys) ... there was a mad Polak instructor (who we all loved). All CFI's have to check each other out regularly - and on his check flight, the other CFI took him down to 100ft in one of the steepest valleys around and promptly said "you have control" (get out of that!!!). There was much cursing (some of it in English) ... but he made it - inch by inch. Unbelievable.

I'm sure the NZFF-Wikipedia (Ian!!) will furnish us with that video title!! LOL!

That's great to know, since there isn't a default glider in Prepar3d, when I went looking for what is available it wasn't obvious what worked in v3. Not that I can afford to buy a glider just for the comp, but my son gave me a voucher from Simmarket for my birthday, so anything's possible.... I did plan to hang onto the credit until I could raise the difference for the A2A Texan, as it is enough to buy any product on Simmarket except A2A!

I have posted gliding shots in P3D2 before, so I'll just drag that one over in the meantime, and blow the dust off it.

P.S. just noticed your paint, that's classy:)

I'd keep the money's for the A2A Harvard, the default FSX glider , not the best maybe but would it port over.

Ditto on the A2A Harvard - it's a *classic*! I still have FSX installed , so will try to port the glider over - and report back here!

I'm afraid not! I'm not a huge fan of missions in FSX/P3D - and glider based ones ... hmmm ...

Adam.

BTW - if anyone happens to own the AS Discus and wants that repaint, please shout (or PM).

I tried to get the FSX DG808S to work with P3Dv3 - no luck - so grabbed a Bergfalke III from here:
http://www.fsglider.de/p_e.htm

.... and fiddled with it to work with P3Dv3. It worked anyway, but I thought people here might enjoy the NZFF livery!

The livery can be found here:
http://www.nzfsim.org/index.php?dsp=dlo ... I_NZFF.zip

Incidentally - this is the aircraft I mainly trained in - and took my first solo in. After that, I "upgraded" to the [Schleicher] Ka-8 (single seat) which went like a rocket, compared to my Bergfalke "bus"!

Adam.

EDIT: I just found out I made really dumb mistake in porting the DSG808S over. It *does* work after all. I'll compile a zip file with it soon though.

UPDATE:

The livery can be found here:

For copyright reasons, I can't include the complete aircraft. The archive contains only the NZFF livery. You'll need to copy the files across from FSX manually (instructions in the archive).

You should try them they are quite good, you get badges/medals in your logbook for doing them. Some of them are quite a challenge as you have a good distance to cover it involves both thermal and slope soaring. You can also set birds on to use as an indication of thermals location instead of arrows which is cool.
