NZDN Weather right now

Postby ZKIWI » Thu Mar 10, 2016 6:21 pm

NZDN 100504Z 22050G67KT 30KM VCSH FEW015 16/07 Q1001 RMK VATSIM USE ONLY

I thought my Flightsim setup was broken as I taxied out. Lined up on Rwy 21 in a Cessna 152 ( I know brave/stupid), gunned it and airborne in less than the length of a white line. I massaged the throttle and managed to fly backwards and land before I took off.

:groupwave:

Luckily it looks like I've missed the worst of it, just flew home from DN at 4pm -- rough trip, but nice and quick.

Just saw some photos of the wind damage at Momona on Facebook... I see they've cancelled flights from 6pm. I've just spent 3 beautiful days there, came home at the right time! Stinking hot here in CH though.
Dunedin is really stunning at this time of the year, the drive out on the peninsula was beautiful.

The A320 from AKL diverted to CHC I think, where it was gusting only half the amount, and 2 ATR's turned back around for CHC after passing the half way point.

I myself would much prefer a so called "chicken shite" pilot , who can tell he's reached the limits of safety
and try again , and again if required.
I think it's called an informed decision , and has very little if anything to do with aircraft type I'm sure.
I was in Wellington earlier this year in very similar conditions, and while watching the landings for a few hours .. every Airbus arrived on first attempt ... the only go around was a Qantas 737.

I had a small experience of wind shear in AKL about 14 months ago, and if I was in anything other than a 1900 I would have gone around. In fact about another couple of knots, and I would have.

Fun story, but not for now.

DUD is the only airport that we get wind shear reports for in the entire network, mainly I'm lead to believe because of an incident with a 732 back in the day.

Its from were I sit here drawing/painting , the aircraft are well above any ground limits, they would still be over the Uni/Jelly-park intersection/marker and still well within limits but ARBUSTED , I was out the airport one other time, wasn't even gusty , another two went around (separate flights) in a standard N/W and mild breeze, I Know and don't think its the pilots .. its the aircraft , a Virgin flew in directly without any hassle ... come to think I have not seen a Boeing in all its years doing go around's unless it was on a training sortie!

Ha the one is front of us was a Jet Connect 737, we were trying to figure out why he went around. Found out about 3 min later why

I cant see that 29 in CHC (severe nor west conditions) is much different from Wellington in similar conditions .
I think you are being a bit naughty Ian . This Airbus vs Boeing thing is getting a bit tired :sleepy:
And for the record , i have seen a couple of 737's abort landings ( non training) on 29 at CHC ... one ANZ and one Virgin.... so i guess the "chicken shite" extends over both types. <_<

AS I SAID ! , and, to keep it within your frame of reference ..I would rather be sitting behind a cautious "ARBUST" captain , than a gung ho Boeing jock (you stared it mate) ...sad , i cant believe i just dropped myself into this meaningless conversation.

Good post, Marty.
Really, the weak link isn't the type of aircraft or the skills of the crew, it's the screaming passengers. Whereas a pilot might know he has the skill to land the plane, s/he might think twice about terrorizing the screamers in the back, and I'm sure the airline would appreciate not being sued and rubbished on Facebook.

If the weather was going to hand me a 15-min early arrival, I would take the opportunity to practice a go-around, or let my First Officer keep up her or his skills - beats stooging around in a racetrack :D

'Propliner' is actually short for 'Proper airliner, with big rumbly radials'

Cheers Rob .... i really didnt want to wade into this , but .....
Im not an airline pilot , and could never have been one , but i have the utmost respect and confidence for those that are.

To see comments like "chicken shite" really bugs me ... bring on the chickens , and the rest is "shite".
