They might just be worried about the already fragile buildings. It can't have been that bad if your internet is still on.

In saying that , the big quake 5/6 years plus back took out power communications from that 4.30 in the morning till 11.00 AM ... the biggest quake , the killer , the internet stayed as with the power but caused severe damage .. depends on the direction it come from.

Well, for me it's as if it didn't happen -- I was on the harbour at the time, and apart from a strange rumble, I didn't notice a thing. In fact I'm thinking of getting a house-boat, and just living on the harbour....
Hope nobody's too shaken up.

Bloody hell, sorry to hear that lads. Been following it all on RadioNZ this afternoon. Interesting to hear local callers reflections on what has happened.

One off the after shocks we had here 5 years back really rocked here but two people I know .. one live Belfast and the other in Cashmere both close to river did not feel a thing , weird how it strikes different areas.

Quite strange how it dose affects areas, I'm in Upper Riccarton, the entire street popped out real quick .. only just come in from lawn mower mission and Mister Wobbly appeared, feeling the movement is an amazing feeling ... straight off I was told Christchurch Airport did not even blink.

EDIT: small after shock just now Wobbly insides .

Region intensity moderate

I love Christchurch, finally made it back home and was devastated by how bad it still was. I've been away for over 10 years now, and one thing I don't miss is the shaking. Christchurch is, and always will be my home town, and each time I hear it shake I worry about all the people I know. And still wonder how you can continue to stay there.

I know that many don't have choices, but so damn pleased I don't have to try and soothe my autistic daughter through it.

We had a mini fire in our house two years ago, and she freaks whenever she smells smoke now. And we get it a lot over the summer, but at least I can show her it's not near us.

It seriously dose affect people in different ways , with me its water, the ocean and rivers I do not go near - totally keep away but have a fascination with warships ... earthquakes I'm lucky here as my place is almost modulated and wobbles with the flow .. the structure dose not have a heavy roof , best way off looking at it people don't like air turbulence , it really is near the same feeling.

As for your young daughter ... Fire scares everyone , outside you may feel one could control it least I would give it a go .. BUT inside "Fire scares everyone" .
