Advice / Opinions Needed: Which FS is right for me?

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby sambo » Fri Jun 21, 2013 3:57 pm

Hi Everyone,

I have been keen on flying of all descriptions for quite a few years now. I've had probably about 2 hours total actual flying experience (Cessna & a couple of gliders & a microlight) and really enjoyed it. I still have plans to get myself a paramotor once I'm feeling cash-flush enough (maybe in 10 years when my kids have left home!? laugh.gif ). However, in the meantime, I've decided the time may be right to get into some flight simming!

I have dabbled briefly in flight sims in the past, but they have not held my attention due to the low scenery detail. Now however, things seem to have progressed markedly and I have been pretty impressed with what I've seen on my Internet forays on the topic. One particular Youtube clip took me a full 2 minutes to work out if it was actually simulated or if it was real and someone was pulling my leg, and I'm an IT engineer by trade as well as a gamer so I've seen a heap of impressive graphics before!

I've done a fair bit of Internet research on the current FS offerings, but TBH I'm a bit confused about what the best option for me is. There are of course a number of different options, each with varying pros and cons and a huge array of addons, some of which won't work with others and each also with their own set of pros and cons. So after stumbling on this healthy looking (& local!) forum I thought I'd ask you, the experts, what you think is my best option & why?! Any comments or suggestions gladly accepted!

Basically my requirements & preferences are (in order of importance):
- Scenery detail (Not just airports)
- Accurate local (New Zealand) scenery content
- A variety of planes to fly (and I REALLY want to be able to fly a YF23, my favorite plane of all time!)
- Oculus Rift support (or future support for)
- Accurate flight physics modelling (although this doesn't have to be a deal breaker and it doesn't have to be HUGELY accurate, just believable)

Basically I want to be able to fly modern jets low and fast, exploring large areas of detailed NZ scenery, with the occasional passenger jet runs / shenanigans.

Obvious contenders (in my mind at least) are:
- FSX (I am concerned about its age, compatibility with modern systems & seemingly huge hardware requirements for maximum detail)
- Prepar3D 1.x / 2.0 (I haven't been able to find much in the way of details about v2.0 yet!)
- XPlane (tho content for this seems to be lacking)

As for budget, let's leave that aside for the moment, I'll work out what I want first and how to pay for it afterwards! biggrin.gif

So, fire away, what do you advise oh wizened ones? smile.gif

Sam.

Welcome to our forum Sam you should find all the info you require here.
I myself am on FSX with heaps of addons I started off with FS5 but have slowly moved up the chain although some members are still using FS9 I kicked it out a couple of years ago when I updated my PC to something that could run it as it is fairly hungry on resources if you want to run it with everything maxed out.
The most accurate scenery is the photoreal that a few developers have worked on and distributed over the years some as payware and some as freeware.
I am sure you will find plenty of info from the members here as to what particular style of flying you are looking for be it high and fast or low and slow.

Hehe, I take it the 22 vs 23 argument is a somewhat contentious subject around here? biggrin.gif I always thought that the 22 was chosen due to cost considerations, but I'd never considered the theory that perhaps that's what they WANT you to think, and the F23 is actually in full combat use, but just hiding out in the US's super secret squirrel bases somewhere! I like that concept! The old double bluff technique! By all accounts the 23 was the best that ever was (at least at the time) and DAMN was it pretty!! Frankly, I'm surprised that anyone even considered the 22 considering they could barely keep it off the ground for more than a few meters! biggrin.gif

Hell, who KNOWs what really goes on in the unseen halls of the USAF. Cracked me up so much when they came out after the 1st golf war and said yes, we have a secret stealth plane (F117A), which by the way has been flying for the last 20 years, and it looks like this <What the!? That can FLY!?>. Meanwhile, the best approximation of the 'F19' was almost the polar opposite of reality!

BTW, if anyone's interested, I have a fairly high res (~4800x3000) image of the YF23 in flight which I'd be happy to share. It's the highest res photo I've ever found of it and in fact I scanned it from a magazine myself & 'shopped the seam out of it. It came out pretty sweet IMO.

The pic is a wider view of this shot:

Thanks for the warm welcome in any case guys! smile.gif

What about the theory that Prepar3D 2.0 is 'just around the corner' and will be bigger, better, faster etc..? I just don't want to drop a few hundy on FSX & multiple addons only to find them all effectively obsolete because P3D2 is out...

YIP P3D , dose have its points, but yet to see it first hand - and i was alway's the first out off the gate .. "the bigger better faster" hmm don't think so .. not yet .. FSX still has a lot to offer , for the ones searching from the next best .. my saying and what i say to all .... "you have to get in the game first " ... couple hundy is nothing ... Multiple addons ... YIP welcome to the club , Directly P3D still has a long - very Long way to go ... serious company's A2A/CS/PMDG/Aerosoft /Just Flight are still building on the FSX platform ...

Yeah, that seems to be FSX's strength; it has the most addons and the best scenery (from what I've seen). However, I understand that P3D (v1) can take most (or all?) of FSX's addons?

What about the issues with FSX being very CPU intensive?

I'm running it on a Quad core 3.0Ghz , 8GB ram GTX480 1536MB .. entire FS system is now very old and needs to be put aside .. But still runs FSX at the high end .

Ok, that's very similar to what I'm running so there's hope yet! smile.gif

So what info is available about P3D2?

Guess only people who use it and follow updates could give you that .... I do like the Lockheed/Martin connection .. but how it suits in a sim i don't no .. .. I would like a look but in my home and able to study and spend time with other than that , still a sim in the works with old promises .
