We're Adrift!

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby Charl » Mon Aug 20, 2012 8:29 am

Microsoft has pulled the service packs for FS9 (9.1) and FSX (SP2) from its website.
It's a final admission I guess, that it is now over to the community.

It's a funny feeling... after 30 years there is no more MS Flight Simulator.
That's longer than some of us have been around!

Talk about spit the dummy. Have they also removed FS2004 COF and FSX from sale?
Remember the 50-50-90 rule. Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong!

The FSX SP2 update (for those without Acceleration) is still here:

FS9 version 9.1 update can be found (among other places), here:

Over the recent days there has been so much talk about P3D - i'll wait till many of my wicked paywares work with it before stepping across, many others tried to compete with MS but fail due more to its huge 3rd party addon data that steamrolled everything out of its way .

FSX has many years left in it , this 6 year old steamroller still has many designing for it and still the staple flight simulation , proof in the longevity is with your FS9 setup Charl , you can still make it work and look better than most peoples FSX setup .

So the lifeboats , not like the Titanic are plenty . My lifeboats name is 'Wilson' cool.gif

I did wonder if one could still buy FS9 - if not it would turn a whole new generation of simmers into pirates!

The link is kaput, the difficulty in finding a live one is partly what prompted my thought.
The mainstream upload libraries will probably start hosting the MS stuff, though.
Me? I long ago downloaded all the SDK and other bits that might come in handy - one day, and have a DVD safely tucked away.

One of the major players, Flightsim, Avsim or Simviation, had these files yesterday.

Sorry, I'm rushing out the door to have a week's hols so haven't the time to find them...

On the plus side, if MS completely abadons FS that opens up the door for other developers to start developing it in ways that may not have been previously possible due to copyright issues. Or does that infringe the P3D license?

Yes I had visions of something like Falcon 4, developed by users way beyond anything originally envisaged.

I guess someone would have to read the MS EULA.
I don't know anyone who has read the MS EULA.

Perhaps the best thing to do is take MSFS and do stuff to it, until someone gripes.
Can't think who would, though?
P3D seems to be focussed on things beyond the entertainment world.

Maybe when they have completed the package, that will make very attractive , to have it working with many different types of sim with option of combat and with new coding , currently its still in is infancy in respect to the many thousands of dollars of payware .
