Just what I have been looking for. 2 aircraft options with full options ...multi player...career mode etc. Add ons can be purchased at own pace as and when you want them. Are they stealing the lead from MS flight with this idea?

I always get nervous with Bit Torrents but it seems to work OK and does appear legitimate as it is a from the company's web page. It does seem an odd marketing method. I guess it does save bandwidth but it does open a gate into the world of online piracy. Bea aware that it is a 3.64 GB download.

I was given the basic ROF subscription + one extra aircraft as a birthday present a while ago - before my PC fried. The sim is really quite brilliant - and the system for adding new aircraft works well.

However - it's really an *online only* sim and even on the fastest plan I have here in Auckland, the ping/update speeds were pretty bad at times. NZ really is poorly served in Internet terms. I gave up with it and haven't re-installed it on my replacement build - maybe because I have to go throught the 3.5Gb download thing again (another reason why that marketing method doesn't work here in NZ).

This country is going to go down the gurgler fast if it doesn't sort its connectivity with the rest of the world. I don't see yet another monopoly rolling out "faster" broadband helping.

No requirement to be permanently connected to the net. More detail in my earlier thread here. Warning lots of pics. I started with the free demo (which is essentially the whole game in a locked state) but the price was right during ther May sale so purchased it plus a few of the addon aircraft

. My broadband varies here in Chch, but I have only rarely had any probs in multiplayer (apart from being shot down regularly as a noob

I regularly use it in the standalone mode as I would FSX/IL2 etc, and the AI is not too bad, although a live opponent is usually more of a challenge

Thanks for the heads up, the size is rather large though

Bit Torrent is becoming more accepted as a convenient way to distribute files. I've always used it to get Linux distros and other legit software / game patches from manufacturers. People automatically think pirated files and viruses but in my experience it's all good.

Download has been going for 7 hrs now and 54% of the way...yep they call it naked broadband...and MS, Google and Steve Jobs think the future is cloud computing. Even with the newer proposed broadband (which will be comparatively slow when finally completed) can you imagine how much bandwidth will be needed for everyone to send their photos, videos etc back and forth. Forget it if you have a data cap and for mobiles Vodafone's data rates will suck the cash straight out of your wallet.

Hey guys watch out when using bit torrent, a couple of weeks back when I downloaded the UP.3 mod(6GB) bit torrent uploaded another 4GB!!! which put my over my monthly allowance. I dont know if you can stop uploading when downloading so might pay to check.

I use uTorrent - and you can control the UP data speed. It doesn't seem to affect the down speed if you do that - unlike some torrent clients.

I must admit though the whole thing is just a joke in NZ. I was on a beta test team once that (towards the release date) involved grabbing nearly the full archive (800Mb) very often - from the USA. I had to actually ask them to *Post* the damn things! They asked what kind of a "shonky" country I lived in!

R.O.F. was a present from a friend of mine in Holland. He grabbed his copy in about 20mins - and just couldn't believe things are that primitive here. I actually went over my data cap to download it (so not much of a "present"

). Neither the previous Labour gov't nor this one appears to have the slightest clue about I.T. It's really quite a disgrace. As an English-speaking nation, we could have had 90% of all the world's call centres based *here* and not half-way up Mt. Everest. Talk about "miss the boat". Grrrrrr.

Another forum I'm on conducted a little survey of members' DSL speeds. Here in rural Washington, I'm fortunate to have DSL - a lowly 1.5 Mbps. Another member, living in France, said that 20 Mbps was acceptable there but most preferred 40. Our download speeds are right up there with our dollar

Here in Japan I get 100Mbps up and down with no cap, for about $NZ80 a month. Thinking about going back to NZ (I'm a kiwi), but I need the Internet for my business, and am not sure if the infrastructure there is up to it yet...

Forget it ... it's NOT ... and won't be for some time by the looks of it (if at all). It just isn't a priority for those dimwits in the Beehive.

I'm a web developer by trade and am constantly frustrated by shoddy infrastructure (outdated Telecom cabling), out-of-date hosting technology, spasmodic loss of connectivity because of DNS servers going down ... and so on. There appears to be around a TWO YEAR time lag in uptake in server technology (PHP, MySQL etc.). Many of the applications I work on need the later versions to run ... so what do we do? Host it outside of NZ. It's pathetic.

That said, the beaches are good!
