(I am using a digital triplehead2Go with three 22 inch wide screen monitors and wouldn't be without Track IR it give it so much more realization)

What a set up.

I have the track IR 5. I really thought that it would add realism to the whole experience, which it does to some extent, but there are other issues. When not panning around you need to freeze the view, especially when zoomed in on a switch or dial. It is hard to click on a moving target. Some VC's are quite basic and do not make for an enjoyable flying experience and ironically make it a less realistic experience. Having to rig up all the wires is an issue too. I tend not to use it as much as I thought....I guess it depends on the type of flying involved too. It is good for helis and combat. I am contemplating purchasing ROF and I am sure that Track IR will add significantly to the experience.
A wireless Track IR would be great.
Remember the 50-50-90 rule. Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong!

i am now the proud owner of a trackir2 unit (thanks to dbcunnz). It might not be the most glamorous of the trackir series but i like it for its 2 DOF. I'm getting quite attached to the mouse emulation feature and seem to spend most of my time in front of the computer with a silver sticker attached to my nose tongue.gif

I,m heading that direction very shortly myself smile.gif , ..... The TrackIR is excellent with the 3 screen setting when flying single seat or tandem likes of the Strikemaster, Tiger Moth and piper Cub type aircraft if you could get the movement it would actually be like sitting in the real thing flying plane.gif

I have v4 and I used it for a while and now it's just collecting dust. While I found it really great to look over your shoulder on final, or lean over the side in a taildragger during take-off run and look behind the yoke to find hidden buttons, it also had two drawbacks:

a) you need to start the external program which gets annoying after a while (I like convenience) - though I suppose one could configure it to autostart with FSX.

b) your surrounding light really affects the device. During the day I have light coming through a window and during night there's always a light on somewhere which confuses the unit. It's probably great when you're in a dark room, but external light sources confuse the tracker.

Breathtakingly gorgeous FS landscapes for New Zealand.

That pretty much sums up my feelings as well. I usually have the program running if I am trying a new aircraft. I can then position myself in the best viewing position, then hit the F9 key. That disables it but holds that position. Without having a yoke button assigned to disable it I have been using a length of dowell to use the hot keys. I do find it good for Helicopters though.

I have a V3 with the vector clip that gives you 6DOF and quite frankly I love it. For light aircraft, when you're flying around VFR, nothing beats it for immersion... on 2 x 22 inch monitors the whole thing looks pretty amazing...

Yes I agree with what Christian says in both (a) and (b) but it is not much of a bother to have TrackIR sitting in your task bar and double click on it start it and yes I quite agree the light coming from behind you can be a problem but there is always an easy fix for that just rig up a dark screen behind you fixes that problem.
I always assign two keys on my keyboard that is very easy to find without having to look for them as the pause center buttons for my TrackIR so it is very easy to hit the pause button when I go to plane spot view.

I had both TIR and AS start automatically with FS at one point - I think it's something in FSUIPC, but without having the sim running I can't check.

The moving target thing isn't a problem if you have enough yoke / joystick buttons to assign one to freeze it (and one to reset the view), and mine is quite happy under any overhead artificial light, or daylight as long as the curtains on the window behind me are shut. Probably helps that they're dark blue ...

I've also found that even in a really bad VC TIR makes it almost worthwhile - if you need to do anything delicate flick back to the 2d screen, and when you're just cruising along steering enjoy the freedom of being able to peer almost straight down out of the window to see if you're up to where those two rivers meet yet ...
