Ardmore Simulator Testing

Savern Reweti is at Ardmore flying school at the moment, as part of a country wide tour of flight training establishments where he is comparing the effectiveness of his home built $10,000 sim compared to the half a million dollar Frasca sims that are currently being used to train students for instrument procedures. As part of his research for Massey Uni, he needs to record people doing a few basic overhead rejoins and circuits at NZPM, on the two different sims, which he is obtaining data from- me and some mates had a go yesterday which was good fun.

Anyhow, the more volunteers he can get for this the better, so if you have nothing to do this arvo, come down to Ardmore Flying School, and either ask at the front desk for him, or come around to the simulator room next to the middle classroom for about 30 mins of flight time. Cheers!

I don't think anyone here would ever consider this to be a case of 'volunteer work'! If there'd be anyone benefitting, it would be me! Shame I don't live anywhere near Auckland.

Ah yes, had a go myself in the Frasca here. Not a bad setup he has, wouldnt mind having a setup like that in my room!

Nah didn't have my camera with me- was actually writing up a flight plan in the classroom next door when he asked us to come have a flight. Basically it was a nice big plasma up front- two smaller LCD's either side for peripheral views in VC mode and a smaller LCD screen lower down on the left which recorded in flight tracking on the FS2004 flight progress screen. Had all the rudder pedals/ control wheel / trim and flap tabs / throttle quadrant and radio stack attached- he was using my own repaint of the JustFlight Piper Warrior too

Being a flight sim nerd, just like with the ANZ777 simulator, I'm going to have to say the graphics suck! I know what you're going to say- its all about the produces and flight environment etc etc, and it feels quite intense with all the force feedback on the control wheel and pedals and concentration required, however at half a mill, its a bit out my price range, plus the $200 per hour to use it normally, and maintenance and hire from Frasca- I think Savern's new setup will become far more popular!

PS- Saw a few of the new Diamond's being assembled and test flighted out at Ardy this weekend, do you get to transfer across to those Keagan?

Hmm, I saw him out at Ardmore the other day - didn't realise it was Savern Reweti. Nice to put a face to the name but if I'd known who it was I'd have had a chat to him.

By the way, if you're ever in the sim and your instructor leaves the room, you'd be amazed how well that thing does aileron rolls.

Nah Andrew I meant having a setup like Savern's sim. Wouldn't touch a Frasca with a 50ft pole! lol

Yep first two get flown down on Thursday Will probably get a type rating when I finish my C-Cat in August in prep for teaching the next intake .

I was surprised too- small world eh! I'll bear those rolls in mind Leo, when I actually get around to my instrument simming in like 2010 lol.

And lucky you Keagan- those Diomands look pretty flash. Be sure to post some pics and let us know how they fly.

The only flaw in this plan being the need to get certification from CAA to be able to log time in it... which I imagine is not a quick, easy or cheap process

Still, you only need to get the certification once, and then you can pump out as many as you like... so I guess you can amortize the costs over however many you think you will be able to sell...

For anyone interested in what would be required for certification... The last time I checked, the NZCAA base their requirements on CASA's standards... a little light reading for all you insomniacs!


And a shame he was there on Sunday... it was jade's birthday... so I was 'banned' from anything even vaguely aviation related
