Couple of IFR Q's

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

when flying IFR, what charts should i use under which circumstances? eg, when would i use RNAV STAR rnwy 34 NZWN? and when would i use VOR DME approach rnwy 34 NZWN? which should i use if flying WB icon_arrow.gif WN? basically, when and why should i use a STAR approach and when and why should i use a VOR DME approach?

also, is there any way to fly STARs without GPS?

WB to WN
Join the arc for the VOR/DME 34 from the WB-WN track (054degrees)
You would use the RNAV Star if you had an RNAV equipped aircraft and was given to you by ATC
Same with the VORDME34 if you wanted to carry out the approach or airtraffic control wanted you to do it i guess.
STAR is used to regulate the traffic flow into busy airports, used if given to you by ATC otherwise you would track straight to the beacon and carry out and approach.

STAR with out GPS? --> I have a feeling most STARs are becoming RNAV, not sure but its possible only Auckland has non RNAV STARs someone may correct me though.
