Mountains, Roads & Rivers Of NZ - Where are the 3500 airstrips?

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby ScottyB » Sat Dec 06, 2008 5:57 pm

Hi guys,

I am going to purchase the Mountains of NZ and Roads & Rivers of NZ bundle. It says there are over 3500 bush strips/ airstrips around the country. What are these like? Would you be able to give me locations of some of the 'cooler' ones?

Thanks, SB

There was a .pdf file floating around with airstrips marked as red circles (?). Not great for pin-pointing them as the map covers all of New Zealand, and is fairly 'zoomed out', but might give an indication of what's included. smile.gif

These airstrips are in the topo data which is also utilised by google maps

Simply go to our very own google maps mashup at http://www.nzff.org/maps/ and pan/zoom (click and drag and scroll wheel respectively) to the area that you would like to fly around. Ensure you are in the 'map' view initially, the airstrips will be shown as a dark gray area at smaller zoom levels.

I'm not knocking the scenery, because its great, I've owned it since October 2005. BUT there are a heap of strips that are unfortunately missing. In the Cromwell region there are a total of 12 strips missing and the majority of the included strips are outdated or not currently used. I've got a mate whose just finished training as an ag pilot who pointed it out to me.

This is because of the source data that was used for the scenery though, which in the more rural areas of new zealand is over 30 years old in some areas. It was sourced from LINZ and they are in the process of remapping a lot of new zealand.

It is still great fun to actually land on some of the strips, the trick is finding them!

I downloaded these two free files from Geographx a couple of years ago NZTM_Airports_Northisland.pdf and NZTM_Airports_Southisland.pdf with all the airport plus topdressing and private airstrips. You need to have Christian's Red Barron NZ topo installed to see them and some are very hard to see when flying.
I have zipped both files NZTM_Airports_Northisland.zip 1,787 KB and NZTM_Airports_Southisland.zip 1,740 KB.
If anyone wants a copy of these files just email me cunniffe.d@ihug.co.nz and I will attach them to a reply email.
Here is part of one pdf to show what they are like.

Jeeze you aint joking, I just spent the last couple of hours flying round Mt Pirongia in an Air Tractor. Found 10 strips that are visible from the air, but only about 4 of those were landable (no matter how clever you are) coz they disapear into cliffs or have hills in the middle of them. I guess the 20m resolution of the LINZ data isnt quite enough?

Nearly all the ones I was scoping out were on a reasonable slope too. I was thinking of creating airports/runways/afcads for them (ala the Flock of Fletchers project) but is it true you can't create a runway on a slope in FS9? Would you basically end up with a ramp sticking out the side of the hill?

Yes it's one of the laments of all versions of FS to date - no sloping runways.
The GNZLAP AFCAD for NZ22 at Ruapehu is just such a case in point, it created a massive edifice sticking out of the mountain.
Lawrie skilfully created a set of terraced flattens for his scenery there, which improves things a lot.
Of course you don't really need an AFCAD at all (unless for AI), just fly onto the hillside with the Fletcher...in real life there is not likely to be too much in the way of airport scenery there.
