I have spent a bunch of time getting FSX optimized for my machine recently and I'm very surprised by some of the results....
1. FSX Addon aircraft provide better (higher FPS) than even the default aircraft. The DA Fokker and Aerosoft addons are the best examples I have found; around a 20% increase over the default KingAir for instance. Even the Wilco E-Jets, Legacy, LSH Maddog 2006, LDS763 and PMDG 744 perform well...
2. I added Flight Environment X and was terrified the Ultra high res textures would cripple my FPS....they actually increased by about 2 or 3 FPS...
3. ActiveSkyX gave me another 2 or 3 FPS...
4. Gaining confidence, but still certain I could sabotage the effort with Ultimate Terrain I put on UT Europe....another slight increase in FPS....(I'll be adding UT-USA and Canada very soon)
5. Boosted by almost unimaginable swagger at this point I threw down the credit card and put Aerosoft's new VFR-London on....very usable, but a drop of about 15-20% in frames...the fun has to end sometime...
One bit I do whenever I install an addon and once a week regardless is to run defrag on my FSX hard drive. This does make a noticeable improvement. I use O&O's defrag program with the "name" option as per a recommendation by PMDG...
Where I had thought FSX would be limited to GA flying I'm now keenly keeping an eye on the SquawkBox 4 reports and so far they look very good. I anticipate flying online with FSX very soon....
