Kelburn,

Well, yes and no. On the point and shoot settings on DSLRs, the shots actually come out worse than on a normal point and shoot. But If you do have a reasonable level of skill and quite good knowledge of photography, the shots are obviously going to be better than.

What type of camera do you have atm? I went from Point n Shoot --> Super Zoom --> DSLR. This enabled me to learn alot of the manual settings on the Super Zoom, and get reasonable shots, unlike on a DSLR where shots with the wrong settings look worse than bad.

As for the long exposure time shots, Yeah, ive taken a few- But none in the proper environment. Im off to Melbourne/Sydney in 2 weeks where I should be able to show you some results if you wish.

Basically using a Kodak Easyshare point and shoot. I don't have a huge amount of knowledge on DSLRs but know how to use the basic-medium features. I want a camera with the ability to manually change settings etc.

Get a Super-Zoom and save some money. Panasonic FZ50 or similar would do the trick- Cheaper and just as good in the semi manual department.

I know what your saying but I like the ability to be able to do everything yourself with a DSLR. I feel it would be worth paying an extra $200-400 rather than just buying it again in future.

Also I don't know of any regular Jetphotos/Airliners.net uploaders who don't use SLR (not just digital ones).

I feel like I'd enjoy the challenge and I've decided to no longer buy an ipod so...
Is there anything wrong with jumping straight to a DSLR? I know what most of the features do to a basic extent.

I think you will find plenty of shooters use SuperZooms, but basically none SLRs.

Challenge, yes perhaps, you just have to ensure not to get frustrated. Im not really aware of your knowledge which you say you have to some extent, so im not one to make a judgement on that.

To help you ponder, heres a shot I took in Brisbane City the other day, with a little editing, I think its quite creative. Let me know what you think!

I think you'll be fine with a DSLR Kelburn.
I considered a DSLR last time we bought a camera, but even though I would have been fine with it, the rest of my family may not have. We got the Fujifilm S5800 instead, which is a very nice camera.
Quality is way better. Superzooms are nice, but the do it all lens has its limitations.
It certainly is different to a point and shoot in some ways, but if you already know some manual stuff then you shouldn't have a problem.
Especially if you know about exposure and the three things that control it, add in some composition knowledge and some lighting stuff and you'll be sweet.

I like your shot benwynn, looks very nice smile.gif.
