BSOD's

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Postby Redda03 » Fri Jun 20, 2008 11:25 am

I have experienced approx nine BSOD's in the past four months and up until this week I have had no problem powering up again and rerunning either FSX or FSX.....however, this week I reloaded FS9 and discovered that after
the FS2004 Splash Screen finishes it's loading sequence I get a stalled black screen. I have now run out of options to fix this problem!! I had Nvidia 174.74 (Beta) installed when this particular BSOD occurred and have since loaded the latest 175.16 version. FSX is running OK though I may not have been operating it for a decent length of time to completely eliminate another BSOD. I have never had this problem before in a many years of flightsimmimg and both FSX and FS9 were installed on to my new setup OCT 07 and I cannot see how my hardware could be faulty?

Basic Setup is:

Intel Dual Core E6850
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 LGA775 Motherboard
ASUS N8800GTS 320M Video Card
700WPSU
XP and DirectX 9.0C

The BSOD message last week read:

Technical info:

* X3 0X0000007E (OXC0000005, OX804EE6F6, OXB6ACE7C3C, OXBACF7938)

Check with your hardware vender for any BIOS updates.

Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.

If you need to use safe mode to remove or diabale compoments. restart your computor, press F8 to select

Advanced Setup options, then select safe mode.

I realise I have the option of a complete FS9 reinstall.....but maybe one of you "Gurus" out there have a much simpler solution!!??

Hmmm, Havent suffered a BSOD in quite some time now, so I cant remember what the error messages were (even remotely).
Try putting that X3 code into google, maybe with "FS9 error message" in front of it and have a good long trawl through the results.
It's saved my arse a few times before smile.gif

Hi there Redda. So, I'm far from being an expert on debugging BSODs, but I think you should rest easy in assuming that your hardware is most likely not at fault given that it's pretty new, and there is at least one potential likely cause of the issue.

That potential cause I'm referring to is the beta NVidia drivers. I note that you mention that you've upgraded them, but for all that, you might be better served in rolling back to the latest WHQL certified release for stability reasons. Personally, I had no end of trouble with the NVidia drivers, admittedly on Vista, including all kinds of BSODs, "Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered" messages, etc. I switched to an ATI videocard, and have had none of these issues since. So that, to my mind is the most likely cause.

Also, do you have Windows XP Service Pack 3 installed? If not, I'd suggest that it might be worth doing so, since there are likely to be a number of hardware abstraction layer, etc fixes that may sort you out.

Finally, if your issues still persist, it might be worth checking out the Microsoft knowledge base for troubleshooting info. Links to articles from this will appear if you search the stop code (the 0X0000007E part of the message you received) in google as Alphashark has suggested already.

If you're really keen, you can also grab a copy of the MS debugging tool called WinDbg to analyse the memory dump that Windows produces during a BSOD. Be warned though that this is not for the feint of heart, and I've only attempted this myself since I *sort of* know what I'm doing, being a software architect.

Cheers
Mark

AlphaShark and Mark,

Appreciate your comments.

I do have the XP SP3 installed....and the Nvidia driver now installed is a 175.16 WHQL certified.

I am now confinced that I have a hardware problem and I intend to get the system checked out by the suppliers up at Palmerston North ASAP.

Thought you may be interested to hear that I have been able to get rid of my BSOD problem.

My setup was checked out by the Computer Co in Palmerston Nth where I purchased the PC Oct 07 and they advised that a XP SP3 install I made about three months ago had apparently corrupted my system...the only practical solution was for a complete uninstall/reinstall of XP OS.

Both FSX and FS9 are now operating like clockwork though I still have a lot of programs and FS addon scenery to reinstall.

Cheers,

Bob R

Radical surgery...I've also been advised that SP3 is highly suspect on certain installations.
I've had the odd BSOD lately, thankfully seem to have passed with the latest Windows Update.
(Although, come to think of it, didn't MS say XP support was going to stop in March??)
