Laptop Usage

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby Kelburn » Sat Jun 07, 2008 10:16 pm

I want to do an over night (fly while I sleep) flight that will last 10hours.
Is it safe to leave my laptop running for 10hours on FS9?

Probably reasonably safe. If anything happens in the way of things getting too hot it'll probably just turn off (at least mine does). Prop the fan area up so that it can suck air in pretty easily - don't leave it on stuff like carpet or a duvet or anything... ;)

Okay to leave it on a wooden desk?

(Plus my room will get to about 12* and under)

Yea, desk should be fine - I'd personally stick a book under the back half to prop it up if I was going to leave mine overnight (but mine has lost half of it's rubber feet - so that's my reason  ). Yea, nice and cool won't hurt things (except make it a bit uncomfortable for you in the morning :P ). :)

Oh yea? So far this year mine has got down to about 10-11°C (I wake at 7-7:30, not 6 though...). It can be a real effort to get out on cold mornings.

Man!

I was 200nm away and guess what! My Plane ran out of fuel.
Is there any way to change the distance the aircraft can fly through the cfg or air files?

Probably, easier way to do that would be to tick the 'Unlimited Fuel' box in the Realism settings. :wink2:

Or choose a closer airport :P

Yep, I'm assuming you're talking about Kelburn. If you read his first post you'll see the flight was flown while he was asleep.

Just out of curiosity Kelburn, what flight/plane was it?

It was probably a legit flight, he just decided to fly it at FL290 at mach .86 in a 747 :P

Which is why a lot of VA's don't allow unattended overnighters. In real life some one has to monitor fuel consumption and adjust flight paramaters appropriately.

I was awake at the 200nm mark.

It was a 777-200ER Meljet. Cruising at FL380 @ mach 0.84.

With some nice .cfg tweaks I managed the flight today with excess fuel (I used 3 quarters-four fifths)

The 200nm could have also been made up by step climbing (I assume you went straight to FL380?), as going straight up with a full tank would have used a helluva lot of gas...

No I went to FL320, then FL380 when I woke up I think.

Not that I have a laptop, but I frequently have flights in excess of 18hrs in FS9 and have no real issues (usually head off to bed around the 3-4am mark and wake around 8-9am).

Just try to make sure you use the appropriate power settings and cruise altitudes for the aircraft... one rule of thumb is looking side on in cruise , the aircraft has a nose-high attitude, you're either flying too high or too slow for the given weight (obviously if you've got the taps wide open, you're too high)

The weekend before last I took a Shackleton MR3 from Goose Bay in Canada to Duxford in the UK - 3600nm covered at about 170kias, and still enough fuel to carry on south to Gibraltar ^_^
No .cfg tweaks either...
