Joy Stick Problems

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby thunder » Thu Mar 20, 2008 8:36 pm

hi to all you experts ------------------ i need some assistance please , Im running F/S 2004 have been for some time , still having problems with line up on the appoach with heavies ? i have another situation ,and that is just after lift off on the anitial climb some of my aircraft are difficult to control , like rising to 200ft with pressure on the joy stick the nose drops --rises ---drops etc , i findlevel manual flight almost impossable, pleased i have an auto pilot the Cessna Baron is un managable jumps all over the place impossable Yet the Cessna Caravan is not a problem ?, i have adjusted my joy stick sensertivity to near zero on the slider, still jumps arround What does the Null Zone Mean? ive also checked the joy stick calibration ,s i notice that the nose up---------nose down calibration has a jerky movement its not smooth, i have a Thrustmaster Joy stick is it past its use buy date ? this problem is not new i run a 6600 ---------- 128 mb graphics card could this be the villan? i do plan to replace it to a 7600 ----- 256 mb graphics card? can some one recomend a better joy stick please or what ever :arrr: , i would like to purchase more F/S programs but im reluctant to while haveing these problems, would appreaciate the experts feed bck ------------ many thanx Noel Klein

HHmm well id say its just setting at the moment so chill out for a sec ,now it proberly has nothing to do with your graphic card at all so thats good ,now to the joystick
now we cant rule out that it past its use buy date yet ..
so now we look at settings ,null zone means the bit of dead zone in your joystick like where its doesnt work, the more null zone you have the more input you have to use to move out of the null zone circle "makes it very hard to fly with more null zone "so now ill show you how i set up my joystick

relisum settings
general,100% then take the silder back one to 99%
all other sliders in this window to the right 100%
i leave crash and stuff off for good reason :P
now go to null zone and side them all to the left 0%

see what this does these are very high settings but now you will have or should have the most control over any aircraft ,some will be sensitive and really hard to fly ,like choppers or you mite just find that now you can fly those aircraft that need more input than some with such a lack of response its not funny ..

have you got rudder axis on that stick ?
this helps alot more

i hope you have some luck and get back to us if it didnt help at all and will go from there ..

Another thing is did this joystick have software to install, or did you just plug her in and start flying?

Not boosting to much but i can fly anything and land whatever just about anyway ,try a a380 in raglan once ,i have been doing this awhile though and i was really bad once ,i land the heavys the same way i land any fix wing the only difference is the airspeed and having extra spoilers and rev thrust , 737 and jets around that size i land always 160-140,,747 add 20 "180" i pretty much always have full flaps and just coast down the glide scope ,if over speed i just engauge the speed spoilers and cruz down to 160-180 again and turn them off again keeping on the throttle all the time and giving little inputs , i guess thats a chopper/plane thing ive always done ,i have a bit of a gun ho attitude but i always land it ..
planing ahead is important ,knowing were you are and keeping a eye on the runway "about half way down " should and will get you in with abit of practice ..
have fun lets just hope the joystick does its part

hi Creator many thanx for your imput, a negative result my aircraft wander all over the tarmac on take off totaly out of control ------------ yes the rudder is enabled ---------- may be i should kill it , be for it kills me where to from here do you think , (flag my thrustmaster joy stick )--------------- what do you use? are their any basic test for the joy stick , as i mentioned be fore when i check its callibration the fore and arft movement is very jerky ----------- latrel movement is smooth , rotation is a bit hairy , regards (Thunder)

Another thing you could check is weight & balance. Aircraft are very sensitive to the position of their centre of gravity -- too far forward or aft and the plane can become uncontrollable. Have a look in the fuel/load dialog, and make sure that the plane is not overloaded, and the load is evenly distributed. (some addon aircraft have been "interesting" in their default loading!)

Its probably time for a new joystick id say- Older/simple joysticks get a lot of dust etc in the pots which makes the inputs very erratic. My old Thrustmaster (sounds like an adult film actor) used to be almost impossible to caliberate...move it a fraction to the left and the input would jerk over to full left, move it full left and it would only go half way on the left axis.

Id highly recommend a MS SideWinder Precision pro 2- You can get them off trademe second hand for $30-40
