Southland Gliding Club?

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby Tailgunner » Fri Feb 15, 2008 3:33 am

Gliding is my thing, real and virtual, and my favourite video is Natural History New Zealand's brilliant WINDBORN, A JOURNEY INTO FLIGHT, which documents a hairy ride with Gavin and Justin Wills pair-flying from ?? to Milford Sound. In the film, the only clue to the strip they fly from is a shack labelled Southland Gliding Club. It was possibly from the same strip that in 1954 Philip Wills was winch-launched into wave and an altitude record. I'd like to pinpoint the strip, and hopefully the club, so that I can take my virtual gliders there. At a guess it's near or at Simons Hill or perhaps Omarama. If anyone can help a geographically challenged Pom, he'd appreciate it...

Without having seen the video, I'd say a pretty safe bet would be Omarama.
I've been toying with the idea of some AI gliders there for a long time, maybe this will be the push I need

I've seen the documentary and agree - it's fantastic.

It's been a while since I saw it but I'm also pretty sure it was Omarama.
Testers are born to fiddle. What does this button do? Oh! Never mind.....

Thanks, people. Done some Googling, and apparejtly the Southland club is located at Five Rivers. [With a Queenstown PO Box number. ] It seems likely that Philip Wills launched from Simons Hill.
Charl - those AI gliders would be great. Please?

Not sure Omarama would be the right spot - just glider people go there...
