A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby Naki » Thu Nov 01, 2007 11:50 am

Welcome to the forums Chris!

Your input into anything would be appreciated

Your interests are similar to mine (warbirds, older aircaft - Spitfire, Mustang, Beech 18) although I have never really seriously got into photography (although that is something I would like to do more of).

Fun Ho DC-3 - probably a real collectors item now?

Cheers

Paul

Hey there folks. I'm a kiwi, grew up near Krippner's-airstrip in Ngahinepouri a few miles west of NZHN and have lived in the North Island most of my life. Apart from a 3-year OE in the UK in the 90's where I lived under the Concorde flight-path (which was exciting mostly, and annoying occasionally)

In the "real world" I'm a web application developer who rides Japanese motorbikes and does a bit of tramping and trout-fishing (which usually involves chopper flights into the Urewera's). In the virtual world I fly round NZ most of the time, usually in props like the B1900D and SAAB340 and the occasional CV580 and H500 funnily enuff :-)

I've been playing MSFS since the 1980's when it was a low-res 3-colour magenta/cyan/white thing that kids today wouldn't touch with a barge-poll. Since then I've owned more legit copies of it than any other paid for software I've ever used.

I've always had fairly modest hardware to run the thing on and typically own the version before the current one... which is why I just recently upgrade to FS9. Yes I'm a bit of a luddite, but for me (and you guys I'm sure) the buzz is less about full-on graphics-rendered realism, and more about "flying" a virtual aircraft I may have really been in, into and out of airports I've either visited or have lived near.

I've not got a PPL or student license but I recently did a trial-flight out at Hamilton Aero-club and suspect it might be the 1st of many. I have however got a mate who's a commercial pilot who thinks flight-sims are a bit silly so I love annoying him with my virtual adventures. My wife just doesn't see the attraction at all (I suspect this isn't an unusual reaction) and has demanded that my only additional piece of sim-related-hardware be a joystick (I'm working on hiding some pedals under the desk)

I'm also a collector-type and am forever downloading repaints, panels and sound files, which is how I came across this forum. I've already benefited greatly from reading the threads here on AI-aircraft sources and setup for NZ etc, and you guys are directly to blame for me forking out for a couple of payware aircraft recently (PMDG-B1900 and a Flight1 Cessna441)

The opportunity for repaints and add-ons that the MSFS architecture enables is what I find so refreshing in today's commercialised software world and although I'm not the biggest Microsoft fan I have to commend them for keeping it this way for so long, communities like this one just wouldn't exist without it.

Anyway, I look FWD to engaging with yaz in the forum. I'm really interested in doing some repaints and modelling (used to be a CAD draftsman), and who knows, maybe I can contribute something web-based in the future if anyone's looking for help on a project.

Great, cheers Charl. Just decompiled the BGL file for the copy of GNZLAP I have, it doesnt have ZK-JMY, ZK-JSP or ZK-EJZ in the Aircraft.txt file it so maybe I have an old one. Will scout around.

Hi all, have just joined this forum. So far I have been playing Il2 and Pacific Fighters and am keen to get a more serious flight sim - looking at Microsoft Flight Sim 2004 mainly because it has a DC3 on the cover! (your opinions on this Vs X or any other are most welcome).
In the real world have done 1 lesson in a Cherokee, hopefully I can afford another before Xmas.

Hi Guys
My name is Ashley I have always had an interest in aviation but didn't start getting into flight sim until I started working at Pacific Simulators where basicly I look after all the computer for the Sim's and our internal network I spend some time working as a computer and network tech before starting with PacSim

I don't fly on Vatsim often but do run my own FSD server for myself and the guys a work, normally fly small GA or Military.

I don't often post but I do stop by alot to read the lastest posts

So when are you gonna organise a session in the Sim for the NZFF.org community ;)

Hi all. I am obviously new if I am replying here. So hi.

I am Colin. I live in the UK.

I have a good interest in FS and flying in the beautiful new zealand area.

I am here through a birdie telling me to come from another forum. I like to be heavily involved in the FS community. I fly FS9 and soon FSX. I also like a break from them by flying an older sim FU3.

I like to fly GA and mid range aircraft. I cant fly longer than 4 hours straight usually. I have the attention span of a donkey.

So hi to you all. And hopefully we will all get on great with me.

As you can also see I have the danceing bear. Never under estimate its power. It can do things we can only dream of.

>nzflag<

I keep waiting for that bear to jump up on the box...
Welcome Colin, I was a fan of FU2 because of the flight dynamics (and the glider!)
Be interesting to hear about (and perhaps see) some of your FU3 experiences
There's a little subforum for those "Other" flightsims here.

I have said this on other forums. Never under estimate the power of the dancing bear.

As for the FU3 shots, I will get some up here soon as possible. You are correct it still beats FS in some respects. One of my favourite things in it is on the grass fields animals run across runways etc so you are constantly watching for them. I will get shots ASAP. :D

Bob living in Wanganui

PLEASE DONT blame me for michael laws!!! PLEASE

I am a more mature version of what I used to be, started out wanting to fly with my first pay packet. Got up to some six hours towards PPL and discovered girls.

3 marriages later......

Flight sims are a passion, have been using MSFS in one form or another since it was first introduced, No, not got FSX, I wont be using Vista until at least the seconf major bug/fly spray !!!

4WD is another passion, I am the regional rep for OFFROADEXPRESS ore.co.nz . Newsletter editor for same.

I was a member of this forum some time ago, but house renovations sort of took precedence, as you may well undestand!

Mostly, I like to fly big pston engined transportd, DC7F is my favourite, but am happy with any DC aircraft.

Second and not by much, is a cresco or fletcher, I WANT ONE!! a REAL one!! hehhehehe dream on, Bobby!!! Win lotto first!

its real good fun flying up the tararua ranges, (hedge hopping) in a DC3 from WTN to Paraparamu, to PN , (using the 20M mesh of course) and WTN scenery.

Another good thing, is to use the PDF's from Geographix to place the bush strips in the Kaimanawa Forest park (and others) and fly in and out in the Cresco. All places I have hunted and fished for far too many years.

be GREAT to do it in flightsim company too.??????????
