Really weird noise at midnight

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

Postby brownbox » Tue Nov 21, 2006 7:57 pm

I was awake last night at 12:00am, and I heard a sound of a light aircrft. I thought, now what the hell would a plane like that be flying around at this time of day? So, I went outside and was amazed at what I saw. A single prop plane, probably either a cessna 152 or 172, flew right over my house, Im guessing at around 30m high. Could someone clear me up on what this person may have been doing? The local airports (Te Kuiti and Hamilton) are both around 50km away.

It was fine weather and a full moon.

Just curious

Holy moly... that certainly isn't safe!

Anyone volunteer to recreate this in FS?

Nor legal!!! :o Minimum altitude in a rural area is 500ft, and urban 1000ft...

It was probably someone stuffing around at night.... Whereabouts do you live, like rural farmland??

Well dunno exactly what they were doing, but if you got a rego they would be in a tight spot with the CAA and Airways NZ...

How odd!

Recently I remember hearing lots of low military choppers over Auckland in the dead of night... turns out that the RNZAF were practicing landing on skycrapers in the CBD with no lights on

Also, yesterday I heard what I thought was a low BN Islander, so I tunrned my scanner on and looked outside and it turned out to be a 1900d at 1500 feet. Just then, the Police Eagle 1 reported it's location, right above Half Moon Bay at 1,200 feet and the controller gave out a traffic warning for the 1900d, with the helicopter being only 300 feet below it

Could be a Police aircraft searching for dope using Thermal Imagery or other night vision equipment. BTW a clear night is also good for night navigation(50km is not that far away for such a flight). As for 30m altitude that sounds a bit low so the pilot might have been using IR gogles. Were the NAV lights on?

Hey Trolly, see my thread in this forum:
http://z11.invisionfree.com/nzff/index. ... wtopic=310

And as for the Police 1 and the 1900D, It seems really odd that the 1900D was at 1500ft as this is uncontrolled airspace (everything above 2500 is controlled)... were you listening out on 124.300 (AA Approach?)?

With the 30m high plane, it might have been a RNZAF CT-4 trainer, as they can go almost anywhere... And most often than not any altitude...

Well thats my theory anyway hehe.. :P

That's quite unusual, be interesting to know what they were doing.

I thought so too, the only low craft we usually get over our area are private GA and the Great Barrier Islanders.

Never before have I seen such a low 'airliner' over my house, and it was loud too. I already had my scanner on sitting on the kitchen worktop, just auto scanning through all of my saved frequency (including NZAA appoach and tower) while I was getting some bread out of the fridge.

When I heard the low a/c, I grabbed my scanner and ran out to the deck to hear the traffic warning- not sure what frequency it was on, but I heard the words 'traffic alert' and 'eagle' and previously the 'Eagle 1, 1200ft overhead Half Moon Bay marina tracking to Whitford' which was obviously on the city traffic MBZ.

Towerguy, perhaps you could help us out if you are reading this thread... were you on duty on Tuesday?
