helicopter simming

A place to converse about the general aspects of flight simulation in New Zealand

Postby creator2003 » Wed Jul 26, 2006 9:47 am

yup sure sound like fun those chinooks are one big baby to land anywhere arent they .
Helicopters in the real world are a big part of everything from sar to sightseeing flights and from reading the above comments this seems to be true in the fs world
it is good to see that a good part of you out there have and enjoy the helicopter part of flight simming in fs2004 and others that i didnt even know where out there
new zealand does have a acouple of good helipad scenerys (in fs2004) going on but there needs more as the growing numbers out there join in the fun of rotor.
Somehow i think its like, out fly your fixwing aircraft enough and you want something more, you end up going rotor and go WOW now i need more helipads more helicopter aircraft more more more etc
there are many addons but they are overseas, id like to see more here in new zealand ,we have so many options for flights here and they are short enough to fly rotor unlike other bigger countrys ,and ofcourse having real nz and topo makes this unbelive abubble
i would like to find also more helo pilots out there when i get this multi player worked out (im bad ) i know just havent found the need to make it more real until now
looking forward though to fly rotor with you all (fix or rotor )in New Zealands GODZONE...
just gotta read alexs posting properly ;)

You poor thing Natas, ihug is 2Mb and even that is sort of slow by international standards, suppose it's this unbundling the local loop by our local loopy's(telecon)Helipads are cool on buildings and oilrigs and that but not necessary on the terra firma,I practice taking hunters in to Fiordland,I thinking I might go and get some virtual greenstone too! looks like we'll be able to chase virtual deer and chamois in FSX,it will take an addon by a skilled developer no doubt but it's something feasable to look foward to. Might even be able to shoot a gotcha gun net but that does start to sound like a combat type sim which FS will never be it seems. But if it's only one shot(no reloading) per flight, with the latest dynamic scenery in FSX who knows? We're going to get landing on moving buses so why not land on a moving deer.May sort of scoop it up in a basket slung underneath,Well my dreams are free even if FSX and a decent rig to run it aren't!

considering that there'll be other animals like zebras around, some genius will come up with a deer mod and stick them in the south island hill country...

Now your talking. I'm with Codge, great fun buzzing around Fiordland. I use the RW Helos a couple of times a year to fly into the hills for some R & R.

The photo under my name is from a trip into the Tararua's a couple of years back. I'm in the front passengers seat. R44 belongs to Amalgamated Helicopters of Carterton. Saw a couple of Reds in the tussock on the flight in. Not much room to land in the Park River but JD's a top pilot and a heck of a nice bloke.

It's great using the Sim to fly into areas I've flown into in the RW.

I did an interesting flight into the Dobson River about 10 years ago in a Squirrel from Glentanner. That was an eye opener for a North Island boy. So I enjoyed the video that was posted in the Mt Cook area.

Currently saving for a trip in November into the Ureweras. Hope the weather behaves this time!! We had to spend an extra night last year because of bad weather and the flight out the next morning was rather bumpy to say the least.

The first Helicopter sim I ever used was Tomahawk for the Amstrad back in the 80s, it was good used vector wire frame graphics and you could do loops and rolls in it. The only problem was the protection used lenses with a password which sometimes was difficult to read. Another good chopper sim was Janes Longbow 1 and 2. LB2 was very good as you could fly multiplayer with a 2nd person as the Gunner or pilot. I also had a Thrustmaster F-16FLCS, TQS and RCS at the time which was awesome for flying as you had to counter torque while flying as well as reverse throttle for collective. And yeah the Apache was aerobatic so you could pull loops and rolls etc. Had some good Bluethunder style dogfights in the campaigns with enemy helicopters which made life interesting particularly if there were 2 or more enemy Cobras or Hinds. :D . I've used the FS2004 helicopters which are quite good to fly.f

I'm trying to put a MP session just helos.Fixed wing can come too of course they just might find themselves circling a bit (like vultures) sometimes when we practise hover formations,I've just got to sort my router-(see virtual ANZ thread for details). After that I'll just post here about Helos since this is the helo thread, but I don't want to exclude anyone just cos they can't fly a helo,it's people we want not aircraft,I can always put the AI on 100%. :lol:Will be FS2004

While we're on the subject then -

Check out "Chickenhawk" by Robert Mason

About his experiences as a Huey pilot during Vietnam.

I've read it, worth reading especially like it when he shot his altimeter with a colt .45 :D . I think some of the guys mentioned featured in the movie "We were soldiers" not a 100% on that one though.

Eagle Dynamics has released a new video of Black Shark called Black Helicopters. Its 62MB and shows some of the new effects in BS it can be downloaded from here:

http://lockon.co.uk/index.php?end_pos=1 ... lt&lang=en

You have to register in order to download the video, doesn't cost anything though. (can't find any mirrors for it as of yet but it is amazing what this sim features)

Well with some 400+ hours P2 stick time collected during army life, I guess it was inevitable that I have a few helis in FS9 myself. P2 as in "Here, you fly this thing while I get some shut-eye", "...read the paper", "...recover from my hangover", "...and tell me what you think about the vibes"

I used to be a tech and I just happened to be good at blade tracking and vibration tuning, so I was always called to do the vibe runs - one analysis flight and for 99% of the time only one checkride to confirm. Pilot's darling I was...

Anyway - the best for realism that I have actually had stick time on is the FSHeli.ch Lama (weeeelll I have a two flights in an army Alouette. ). Also - if it's got "Nemeth" on the label, then it, too, is a great ride. (EC120, MD500, KA26).

To support the general tone of this thread - you are right! Helis are difficult first time out. My suggestion is to get something like the Lama and adjust both fuel and payload so that you get the centre of gravity dead centre under the mast. At least the hover is steadier until the fuel drops a bit and you start drifting rearwards.

We used to do that real world for student pilots who had difficulties. Sandbags and a fuel bowser... it is surprising just how good that "Aha" effect is.

Most hours? Probably the SA341 Gazelle with the Bell 47 in near second place. Some Westland Scout and some Westland Lynx. I haven't seen a good Scout anywhere, but hovercontrol.com is good for the Gazelle (look for Cyril Pioffet) - it's more than fair to middling. The alphasim Lynx is good too, but you can fly too fast - the Lynx maxed at 201 kts - and then only with a "roll cage" to stiffen the fuselage. The Alphasim Lynx just keeps on going. Not good.

Remember, hovering a flingwing is like sitting on one of those big bouncer balls, holding a house brick at arms length and balancing a dish with a marble in it on your head. You need a lot of feel in your bum and you need to react before the heli acts.
