Almost checked out.

Postby Splitpin » Mon Jul 07, 2025 8:10 am

What an evening I had yesterday. The day started as normal, flight sim, bit of house work ...etc.
Decided on a light dinner, soup and a couple of small bread rolls...turned out that decision could have been fatal.
I took my first bite of one of the rolls, and God only knows why, it got stuck in my throat ....really stuck. I was now 100% cut off from any oxygen.

Thank goodness my partner was home, she called out for Chris while ringing 111. Chris started the Heimlich manoeuvre for what seemed like forever....things started to get fuzzy. I started to pass out when finally the bread dislodged ...bloody hell. It was just before that I resigned myself to the fact that this is it ...strange feeling.
The other odd thing was that within 5 minutes of the 111 call a guy from close by arrived with a defibrillator, all I remember is him saying he got an alert on his phone....I really want to find out who he was.
While he was here an Ambulance crew arrived along with the fire service, both of which had been only a few minutes away....I got a free ride to A&E and after a couple of hours taxied home.

If I had been home alone , you wouldn't be reading this now...extremely lucky to have had two quick thinking wonderful people here when it happened.
I'm forever grateful.

Good heavens. What a frightening experience. You were so fortunate to have some level headed family members around SP.

Thanks very much for your thoughts guys, much appreciated.
I have to admit, it only really hit home today at work....all the what ifs etc.
This has also made me very aware of what I haven't prepared for, and prompted a few lifestyle changes.

But...I didn't shuffle off the mortal coil , nor did I join the choir invisible .......Woooof !! Its me ...Splitpin...Im back

Take care

I didn't do anything quite like that yesterday morning.
Getting out of my and walking over to ATM......I slipped and fell, at least it was dark and not too many people around.
Two people came out from Subway, helped me up and called an ambulance, I didn't think I needed one but one of the ambos mentioned my head.
One of the security people made sure that my car wasn't ticketed or towed for overparking...all this before 0600.
Up to A&E , had my heart rate checked, had my lungs listened to and a blood test... all good.
Went by taxi to pick my car up, saw the people who'd helped me and thanked them.
Got home and tried to remember what had happened, it all came back slowly.
I was lucky to get away with a bump on my forehead, a graze on my chin, grazed hands and a somewhat swollen left knee.

I am feeling feisty tonight, in part caused by an eye doctor telling me that "the jelly shrinking the retina off your eyeball is due to natural aging"
All you ole buggers: start focussing on what you do, and Take Care.
Start the programme by going out and getting a rocket powered wingsuit.

 I am focused on living to be 100, just for spite.
Every time we review my blood test results, my GP says "All perfect" and I say "But of course, force of habit" . My GP is a nice lady.
I am not subject to a SWMBO, but if I did indulge in a rocket wing suit, Darling Daughter woiuld probly kill me

Another old bu66er story from me ...

Had something of a Trifecta of ailments this week .. first up am coming off a nasty flu that laid me low for two weeks, then on Sunday I hurt my back mysteriously absolutely no idea how just realised it was sore .. and then yesterday my vision went a bit blurry and had a headache and turns out after a Drs visit is prolly a migraine which I've not suffered from before (went to Optometrists to do an eye exam just in case) ... so another helping of Antibiotics and some Prednisone and hopefully I'll have nothing to complain about until NEXT weeks mysterious old fart ailments

Ah don’t you just love the aging process where a simple sneeze, or picking up a dropped bar of soap in the shower, can put your back out?
Mysteriously, time also seems to go faster…….

Yes, this thread serves as a timely reminder that none of us are getting any younger, and we need to take a bit more care. I have found lately that I tend to inhale my food, so I'm relearning how to chew...
But time doesn't seem to be going faster today, your post says '10:15' and it's only 10:08, so today it's going backwards.

Oh my goodness, what have I created.....I feel the collective pain.

Rob..."so I'm relearning how to chew..." please do mate...seriously.

Just to add a bit more, I came home early today. My bloody ribs are so sore, my chest (such as it is) is in various shades of bruise, which wasn't there a day ago. I wont complain, as this injury saved my life, literally.

Take care out there my friends .....please.

You have come to the right place for infinite advice on Getting Old!

Old people should drop the chin when swallowing.
Simple geometry of aging air passages, do try it.
