Cowpatz vs MSFS 2020

Postby cowpatz » Sun Jun 08, 2025 11:11 am

I hate days like yesterday.
It started with updating my laptop, which I hadn't used for around 6 or 7 months. There were a lot of updates to do, some from HP and others were the standard Microsoft stuff.
Sone installed easily and others were a major with many MS updates showing error codes and unable to remove them. Many stalled installs which would probably remain that way for weeks if you didn't reboot voluntarily. After several hours (and a lot of Googling) I managed to complete it. Little did I know then that that would actually be the easier part of my day. My work Microsoft account required a new password. No less than 12 characters which must include alphanumerics, a special character and no similarity to, or reuse of past ones. That took a while as this password renewal happens so frequently that I'm running out of ideas (at least ones that I don't need to write down, and no you can't just add 1 to the last number!). Of course, the auto fill capability of various browsers and programs still has the old password and so on. It took more than 10 attempts to come up with a new password that met the requirements. Where possible I will use a PIN but even those have limits and authenticator apps are cumbersome when used often. By the end of it I had all but thrown the laptop and iPad out of the window or smashed them on the concrete floor.
To calm down I decided to do a quick flight on MSFS 2020. I should really have known better. On the opening screen there appeared something that I had not seen before. A small screen appeared on top of the MS splash screen requiring a XBox login. I had never seen this before and I could not clear it or even close it in task manager. The sim would not proceed past the splash screen. To add immensely to the frustrations of the day it was not physically possible to enter anything into the required email or user Box. Several restarts with the same thing. Google again with only I hit that was anywhere close. The fix was to continuously tap the enter key as you entered each character of the email address. This took a lot of time due to the many entry errors. I eventually found that I could get the timing to a point where i could press the Enter key and then the required email character successfully..........and then the dreaded "Enter user password" appeared. I had no idea what this one would be so went the forgotten password route. I use steam. Another monumental mission. After finally getting into FS it required updates and had changed many of my settings, as if I were logging in for the first time and doing an initial setup. All of this mucking around took more than 1 1/2 hrs.
I finally managed to get into FS and loaded up the iFly MAX for a quick flight. Alas Fate had not finished with me yet.
Even though I have flown this addon a few times before (following days of trying to sort out the plug-in module), today the CH throttle assignments were not working properly. The spoiler axis and both thrust levers had developed a mind of their own and were glitchy. I checked every assignment and looked for conflicting assignments, checked FSUIPC entries, including removing the .ini file. I removed all other plug in peripherals as well as trying different USB ports. At one point they all worked correctly. I paused for dinner only to return to find that the old behaviour was back. I gave up after enduring almost 8 hours of technological madness. It reinforced my opinion that Microsoft should NEVER be allowed anywhere near aircraft avionic systems.
I still have a broken 737 MAX so I will have to go the support route. I'm not sure they will be that interested as they will pass it off as a sim issue. I could go onto the iFly Discord channel for support but i cant think of many things worse than discord. To try to keep track of a thread or search is rubbish. The day that NZFF moves to Discord will be the day I leave it. It's for teenagers.

That sounds like a nightmare. IMHO MS have always had the most retarded auth system out there, just as much of a pain for their corporate logins. Be sure to take any blood-pressure meds before attempting a password reset.

PS, I guess you've considered/tried a password management tool? Takes the pain out of crafting your own. I can recommend BitWarden which I've been using for a few years. Most of them have a browser plugin for ease of use but I prefer to us a standalone client (which works on desktop and phone)

Cowpatz,

Sorry to hear about the problems with your HP laptop and MS2020. Thanks for warning which is useful for anyone who decides to leave FSX for MS2020. Anyone can learn valuable lessons from your experiences with MS2020.

If you do not mind, can you please tell me configuration for your HP laptop that you said you are using for MS2020 as I am curious to know if your HP laptop can run MS2020 very well.

Discord is not for teenagers. It is for anyone even for senior citizens. Although NZFF forums are excellent and UNQUESTIONABLY one of the best flight simming forums in the world, NZFF Discord will be useful for last minute emergency because when NZFF forum member has technical problems with FSX, P3D, XP-10/11, and MS2020/MS2024, NZFF Discord's audio feature can be very very useful for any NZFF member to get minute by minute and step by step technical assistance from other NZFF forum member which sure beats prohibitive costs of phone calls. If the owners of NZFF forums wish, it is possible to make NZFF Discord ONLY ONLY audio without without texting or without without postings so that NZFF members will use NZFF forums for all postings and NZFF Discord for live voice tech support. Imagine a scenerio: a NZFF forum member has problem with installation of famous ToProb's airport scenery, ToProb can use audio feature to solve the installation problem by giving the NZFF forum member simple step by step instructions to solve the installation problems that will concluded into positive results in matter of few minutes. NZFF Discord's ONLY audio feature can be useful for monthly or quarterly board meetings of NZFF administrators and moderators to discuss strategy and future plannings of the superb NZFF forums without spending money to travel to meetings or spending money on softwares for live web conferencing. Discord is FREEEEE

If NZFF owners wish, they can conduct experiment or testing of NZFF Discord's SELECTED ONLY ONLY audio option by inviting ONLY NZFF owners, administrators, and moderators to the NZFF Discord group where they can test audio functions by conducting experiments of monthly meetings to discuss about NZFF's strategies. If NZFF owners, administrators, and moderators like NZFF Discord's audio feature, they can expand by inviting all NZFF forum members while reminding them that this is only for last minute emergency request for live tech support for any software or flight simming problems. If not, then NZFF owners, administrators, and moderators can keep NZFF Discord'a audio for themselves for official meetings and official business of NZFF forums that is not accessible for any forum members.

Hi Aharon,
I don’t use my laptop for flight simulation. I used to run P3D on my previous laptop many years ago. I’d take it and a couple of controllers with me when I was away on long trips. It worked ok but the 17” screen size was a bit meh.
MSFS 2020 is very good. It’s the Microsoft linked stuff that was a problem. The Xbox window was a real surprise and a showstopper especially as I run it through Steam (which I can recommend).
My issues with the iFly have been resolved . I found that the extreme RH lever of my CH throttle quadrant was causing a binding conflict that sent the thrust levers berserk. The spoiler axis I set with FSUIPC in the end. It’s all working very well now and I’m most impressed with the iFly MAX. Very well modelled and handles very nicely. A solid flyer.

Once 2024 is more settled I will make the switch, but at the moment 2020 is going well. There is lots of stuff for it and many of the add on vendors are offering a free or reduced price upgrade to 2024.

Thanks for cool explanations, Cowpatz

I agree with you that public should wait until MS2024 becomes stable, bug free, and perfect.

Yes, it seems every time Asobo put out an updated beta it’s 1 step forward and 2 back. The fact that they are not seeming to be listening to feedback does not bode well. They seemed to have drifted focus towards the Xbox gamers market as opposed to the traditional simmer community.
