A big step up

Postby Splitpin » Mon Jan 22, 2024 5:54 pm

Funny Ol thing life....things pop up when you least expect it.
I've been trying to upgrade my old rig for some time, but every time some bloody thing gets in the way.
However.... a member here had an older system(for him)
for sale at a very generous price, which I jumped on.
I have moved from a GTX750, to a Gigabite 2060 with lots of ram.
After a few teething problems ....thanks to ham fisted bloody couriers....how many languages do we need to say "Fragile"
More soon....

Sorry about the grumpy post last night.
I am loving this new puter. The only problem I've had is with Windows 11 refusing to let me use my dear old Logitech 3D pro.
I did a google search , and was confronted with lots of remedies, none of which I could bothered with.
Went to Mighty Ape to see what they had .....and found a nice looking Thrustmaster T-something, in my price range and Windows 11 compliant.
Problem was , this was Sunday 0800hrs...and I needed this asap...nothing found locally.
According to them , if I placed the order within ,30 minutes they would have it at my door , before 2000hrs ...same day.....yeah right I thought.
So I pushed all the buttons.....and at 1930....it was at my front door. Not from their NZCH warehouse....from Auckland!!

100% amazing.....they call it "Jungle Air" I have no idea how it works, but it's amazing.

More to come.....very hard doing this and working 10 hour days....thanks for your patience.

Big bro, long before he became a Master Mariner of VLCCs, started as a humble Second Officer, responsible for cargo. He had to investigate damage done to a shipment of valuable glassware, which had been clearly marked before shipment to the Med, with the international symbol for "Fragile" which at the time was broken Martini glass.
Unfortunately the destination port was in an Islamic country, so the local wharfies did not know what a Martini glass was or looked like, so they decided the crates had been full of broken glass to start with :givein:
If there's a way, someone will find it.

Hello Marty!
Any mention of the dreaded; "Windows 11" brings tears of anger and frustration to my eyes!
I've been using the Microsoft Windows operating system since Bill Gates was a youngster in his bedroom, (like me). typing on his Sinclair Spectrum 48K, and Commodore C64 Computers.
Never had any problems with all my Home-built desktop computers using Windows stuff... Win 5, 7, 8, 8.1. and 10...
...until Win 11 hit my latest Windows Desktop Gaming Computer (HP Victus)!
Now it firmly refuses to recognise much of my older hardware installations and programs!
One of my Digital Cameras, my lovely, 2004, Pentax Optio 30, DLSR Camera with its older CCD sensor, (not CMOS), refuses to be recognized by my Computer, using Windows 11, without a lot of hassle!
Every time there is an upgrade/update in Windows, it always brings loads of trouble in its wake with much of our older stuff!!

My Present Cameras...
SJCam 4000.
Campark X20.
Victure AC920.
(Plus a few more 35mm Film, and Action Cameras!).
Pentax Optio 30, DSLR, CCD sensor....(3.2 Maga Pixels!).
DSLR 4K Auto Focus, Model DC101L-AF 4k.

Including rooms full of all my old Computers, Hardware, Software, Computer Games, Programs, and Manuals since 1980...(ZX80!)!

Sometimes I just wish I could press a button and return to our older version of Windows Operating System!

Bill Gates..."sometimes, you make me angry!".

Paul....drawing the curtains... :P ..... :D ....!

I too have been using Windows ever since BG stole the O/S from Digital Research (who in turn stole it from Xerox). Prior to that, I owned a ZX81 and an Oric (as well as an Amiga later) ... before getting a BBC micro.

I have this theory that every *alternate* Windows version is a total dud (there've been some real shockers!). Windows 10 was great ... so I expect Windows 11 to be ... well! Having said that, I've found Win11 quite passable on my two systems.

Hello Adam!
I fondly remember spending hours with all my mates, in our bedrooms in the early 1980s, typing computer programs in BASIC language; (Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) in my ZX80, ZX 81, and ZX82 (Sinclair Spectrum) Computers...and including a spot of; "Machine Code" when it was necessary to speed things up a bit, now and again! Later on, I purchased a new Amiga 500, followed by my Amiga 1200 with a special add-on Processor! Then the craze of building our own Desktop Computers with all its hardware became the next thing to excite our experimental minds! Exciting times! I am now drowning under all this computer hardware and software and programs stuff dotted around my house! My children are going to have a problem with disposing of it all when I pop my clogs...(90 next month). Windows 8.1 was my most reliable Windows Operating system, displaying in; "Classic Mode". Windows 10 runs OK on my Laptop, and Windows 11 runs on my latest Gaming Tower Computer. and gives me most of my present; "incompatible" problems and confusion! I'm getting far too old for all these Microsoft headaches!...LOL...!

Really?! A bog-standard ordinary joystick doesn't work ... MS screwing us over again for absolutely no reason whatsoever.
Honestly, it's only really flight sim that is keeping me on Windows at all these days.

Mine works fine with Windows 11 in MSFS and when I used it in the early P3D days.

I'm glad you got a new stick ... but I'm surprised you had no luck with the 3D Pro. I got my Saitek (Logitech) X52 Pro set up quite easily - and Saitek sticks (and associated drivers) have always been a PITA for me in the past.

I can confirm, that my new machine is indeed Adam's "old" one.
He (Adam) spent many hours getting this rig ready for shipping....some of which was undone by the courier...as you have heard.
I'm slowly moving my stuff over, but will need some help from you gurus with some of it.

This will be my second rebuild by forum members...Doug built me a cracker back in the day...which lives on in another place.
What a community we have here......more power to you all.

Talking about joysticks, I see this is about to hit our shores. Think I might start saving up for it as the price tag is pretty hefty

That is nice, but all purchasing of any sort is on hold for me for at least 18 months, which is getting harder since my rig is already 7+ years old!
But I'm hoping to save for a beast of a rig next time around with proper high res VR and everything. We'll see. Dreams cost nothing.
And, of course, this desire is in complete opposition to my other desire to get back to flying IRL and on a regular basis.
So we'll see what the future holds! :)

Jeff, You don't know what the future will bring. I was blown away when this offer came up, because up until then an upgrade was slipping away.
I've only really had today off and have spent most of it moving stuff off my old computer to the new one. War thunder is all good, got X plane sorted, in the process of loading AFS4.
My big concern is DCS, but I'll take my time with that....P3D next.
I noticed after all these years that we are almost neighbors. I'm in that subdivision behind Bunnings at the homebase on Marshlands.

Take care.

You sure are right: we don't know what the future holds. I think that the last few years have shown us that, and for us at least Dec 2022 and all of 2023 was a complete nightmare, financially speaking. Things are beginning to look up but there is a pathway to tread to 'get there'.
I don't often head over Shirley way; I think Mitre10 in Papanui is closer, but I do have the Ryobi One+ battery tools so sometimes I need to go to Bunnings! (I'm 'invested' in Ryobi now with multiple tools so it is 'impossible' to change ... which I'm sure was a kay part of developing such a product range in the first place!) I still need one of those big garden vacuum things because I have some trees in my garden that just can't keep themselves to themselves and have a strong desire each year to make a mess of my back yard ... after all the work we put into it over Christmas too. So disrespectful! ;)

Stoked to hear ya getting the new machine sorted despite the couriers efforts Marty !! You've always been able to pull off amazing screenies no matter what the hardware so cant wait to see what you do w the new kit. You clearly have an eye for composition so that must help

Interesting to see how peeps have slowed down a bit over the last few years, the financial situation has certainly put the handbrake on a lot of discretionary spending of late huh. My AMD rig which I have been super pleased with is slipping down the spec sheets compared to new gear but there's no way I'll be doing a complete upgrade any time soon. Last few years the only time I've done anything serious PC wise is if I've sold something else. I AM looking at a CPU update, swap my AMD 3600X for what will likely be the final AM4 chipset compatible CPU release from AMD, the 5800x3d, but even that I'm only going to do when I sell one of my last two motorbikes (don't tell Fozzer !!! :D )

The migration is going well, the one I was most worried about was DCS, but it turned out to be the least problematic.
The main issue at the moment is all the "sideline" stuff ...like getting Picasa to play the game...but Photoshop is happy with the upgrade.
IL2 will update tonight.....did I mention that DCS took over 12 hours to reinstall. A zillion Gigabytes coming down at 1.2 MB a second.
Will have P3D up and running tomorrow hopefully.
