MSFS2020 vs FSX Joystick and Keyboard set up Complexity

Postby wairoaboy » Sun Aug 20, 2023 11:44 pm

Hi Folks

after around a four-year respite from flight simming, I've returned in the hope of mastering the MSFS2020 sim

Alas, the complexity of setting up the keyboard and joystick compared to FSX is simply mind-boggling

Does anyone know if there is a pre-made cfg file that can be pasted for the keyboard settings to MSFS2020 that would otherwise be similar to the FSX set-up?

Am running a Logitech G940 system, I would be most grateful to try someone's settings....just for the basics

Many thanks in Advance

Well the sim should assign all the default mappings to your hardware.
But I agree it's all rather daunting.
I ended up creating new profiles, deleting all mappings as a first step, and simply assigning the things I needed to a place I could remember!

Decades ago, after many battles with default settings, I found the best solution was to buy an FSUIPC licence , wipe out all the Windows keyboard and joystick settings and re-map everything via FSUIPC. It just works.

Well you could always go for this one which I first saw on this Forum.
But MSFS 2020 recognises standard mapping from any plugged-in control device.
And then also allows you to custom map every command directly from within the sim.

I currently use only a twistgrip joystick which does everything I need:
Engine/flight controls/brakes/flaps/POV hat/switch & reset view.
I still have half a dozen functions available which I will no doubt use up as time goes on.

I tend to use TrackIR and then mouse things peculiar to a particular model, like prime the fuel pump, tailwheel lock, clear the plugs(!) etc.
This actually adds to the immersion I find.

It's a funny old do, and very frustrating, regarding Flightsticks in Flight Sim Programs!
In all my various computer games, since the year Dot, Microsoft Windows has always been able to recognise every controller I have plugged into the USB/Game Ports in my desktop computers, and automatically assign them to the necessary functions....
...except for the new FS2020... ... ...!
... which flatly refuses to recognise my Saitek Cyborg X Flightstick and its default assignments when I load the Sim: ...Ailerons, Elevator, Rudder, Throttle, and Brake!
No problem with all the previous FlightSims; FSX and earlier, but this new; "FS2020" is a right pain in the rear end!
Life is far too short to go through the list of all the various complicated assignments in the program!
I blame it on the; "Steam" and "Asobo" collaboration/complication/constipation in FS2020/FS2024 to find something to drive us all crazy, to get us all to purchase an X-Box and GamePad!
After forking out some 50-odd English Pounds for FS2020, it is impossible to even get off the ground when the Sim has loaded, and the airfield selected, after suffering hours of listening to the background sound droning away while the program slowly sorts itself out!
I'm getting to like/love my Trusty, 2006 FSX, with its tons of free add-ons collected over the years, more and more every day....
...and it always knows what Make/Model Flightstick and its default assignments are plugged into the USB Port!.... ... ...!

Paul...UK... ...!
