Auckland musings

Sorry for the delay, and thanks for the PM's.
The trip was great, a little more involved than I thought it would be which didn't allow me to do more...but that's another story.
The flight up was good, with only a 5-minute hold on the runway waiting for a flock of gulls to be moved along. Arrived to a lovely mild, low-humidity Auckland day. That weather continued for our entire stay.

We were looking for a shuttle outside the terminal when we were approached by a taxi driver asking where we were heading. Told him it was Parnell, and he came back with a price of $75. I was tired and in need of a beer, so I said yes.
My partner said no, too expensive ....he said $65, she said no ...anyway she got him down to $40 cash, and the meter off .......off we went, well done little lady ;)

The hotel was nice, aged, but clean and comfortable with a great balcony view of the CBD and ocean. The service and food were excellent, in fact, I found customer service excellent everywhere I went. Christchurch could learn a thing or two.
On one of my walks (no car this time), I covered the whole Parnell area, the waterfront, and Judge's bay. I've never seen so many cafes, galleries, and boutiques on one road. I didn't do any plane spotting ...but did plenty of car spotting.
It was like a motor show on the main drag of Parnell. I stopped at a little place for a $10!! bottle of Stella, just so I could drool over the Lambo, Ferrari, and McLaren parked outside ...really wanted a photo, but decided not to.
Just about every second car was European, followed by Teslas ...they were everywhere. I did however do some ship spotting. Amazing to watch tugs berthing a huge container ship, and the seemingly endless parade of fast ferries coming and going.
Apart from getting lost on one walk back from the museum (but helped by friendly locals), it was a really nice break. The flight home was good, the only problem was I gave my window seat to my partner, so I ended up in the middle seat (which I hate) next to a very chatty chap who I'm sure had been to a garlic festival ...bloody long 90 minutes.

My only criticism would be the AKL domestic terminal, starting with the drop-off area ... we were dumped in the middle of the taxi lane and had to dodge cars to get to the footpath. The building is a barn compared to CHC, the public address system is shocking .....not being awful, but with heavy foreign accents being transmitted over a scratchy, echoing system isn't ideal. I'm glad we knew what was going on because if you were being paged, you would have no idea of what was being said.
Other than that I had a great time...planning the next, with wheels this time.

Sounds like a good trip. I'm well over-due for a visit, I used to love Parnell, I lived there when I moved to Auckland 45(!) years ago, and I loved to take my camera down Parnell Road, with all the lovely old blocks of boutique shops with courtyards in the back... I lived in a horrid little flat in a concrete block of 20, just above the domain. Plenty of reminiscing lately over some good times in that little flat! And I could walk to work in the city.
I must admit I wouldn't think that $75 taxi would be too exorbitant these days, getting around Auckland was always costly. We used to take turns doing the 'round trip' picking up friends for nights out, and you'd need to budget a couple of hours to pick up and drop off. Auckland is far too big for a Cantabrian.

"Auckland is far too big for a Cantabrian". Very true Rob , but like you, I recall as a younger person navigating the city with ease, Whenuapai to Newmarket etc no problem at all ...not now.
Re the Taxi fare, I was expecting at least $80+ at that time of day...but her indoors wouldn't have a bar of it ;)

"My only criticism would be the AKL domestic terminal"

Too right Marty. Brisbane Int'l is even worse - they must have been designed by the same marketing sharks. You get cleared, and you want to get to the departure area. So you follow a sign which leads onto a long meandering path through the duty-free shop, and there is no escape. In Bris at least there is an exit sign, up near the ceiling about 50m away. In AKL I finished up telling one of the sales people "No thanks, I'm trying to catch a plane, how do I get out of here?" The young lass said to just follow the walkway, which worked. No wonder folk wait till the search party turns up with the golf buggy...might try that meself sometime.

At least I got a pic of Jean Batten's plane. Can't put it up right now, It's not on PostImage.

The problem is that the Auckland domestic terminal was never really designed as such. The original building was small and a cargo shed added to it. Then the cargo shed was converted to terminal space and all sorts of add ons attached. The new terminal will curve around to join up with the International terminal. Of course Covid has delayed all of that but work is underway.

Auckland airport has been under construction for decades.
It's a tough call, can you imagine predicting traffic, and committing $$$ to expansion, just before Covid?

Anyway, as always it's not what you know, it's who you know

Well it would have been a lot cheaper than doing it now. Very little disruption to travelers too. Mind you they widened a short part of the main entry road into the airport; also replacing roundabouts with traffic lights.
That must of been one of the slowest roading projects in mankind's history. The Romans could have done it quicker.

The SH1 Motorway just past Hampton Downs probably took that cake, took about 3-4 years by my reckoning.

But I'm also dreading the extension SH16 to Kumeu
