So to conclude, I redid last nights awful VR experience with the benefits of all my new knowledge. I used scattered cloud weather and took off from NZQT about 15 mins before sunrise, with a flight plan loaded into the GPS so I had a line for me / the autopilot to follow. Dawn lighting was gorgeous, the sun coming up and lighting up the peaks and then the world as I climbed over the lake was stunning, and the flight over the Alps with the peaks lit up pink and everything below in shadow was amazing. At NZMF I turned north and started slowly bleeding altitude off intending to follow the coast up to Greymouth (it has a decent speedway track, who needs a better excuse to go somewhere?) but as I passed Haast it was getting late and NZGM was still a good hour away so I called it good and landed there.
The flight was breathtaking, and I'm completely sold. Yes MSFS could and eventually will do VR better, and it's one hell of a learning curve, but once you figure out how to work with what's already there it's actually pretty damn good.
