What are people using for P3D scenery these days ?

Postby Chairman » Tue Sep 29, 2020 9:19 am

I know, y'all thought I was dead. It's only been, what, 10 years since my last post ? :)

I'm just getting back into flight simming, my gaming pc blew up so I bought a new one specced close to'ideal' for msfs (which is not seeing much use at the moment) but a happy and unexpected side effect of this is that the pc runs my two actual sims (P3D 4.5 and X-Plane 11.5) amazingly well.

Of those 2, X-Plane on more or less default scenery looks prettiest but P3D has the best addons (in my library anyway). What are people using for NZ Scenery for P3D ? I've got some lovely planes for it, it's a shame to be flying them around what is almost a default FSX world.

Cheers.

Hello! Longtime no see.

In regards to payware, I have Orbx regions for NZ and PNW (USA) and all Orbx airports for NZ plus many for the PNW region. I have all the Godzone airports, plus Flightbeam Wellington.

I guess it depends where you want and what to fly? I tend to concentrate on warbirds and light aircraft so I like smaller airports.

Hey, a familiar face ! :)

I noticed a couple of hours ago that orbx stuff is on sale for another couple of days, the budget I have left will cover the NI and SI packs but not the airports. What are the airports like in the orbx scenery without those packs ? Can't remember what I used to do, pretty sure it was VLC but that was a long time ago and whatever computer that was all saved on has long gone :-/ (does it even work with p3d ?)

Cheers

The regions are a must in P3d in my view, although you will need anything like that in MSFS if you should get that at later date. The Orbx default airports are fairly generic but better than p3d default.

I haven’t used VLC for years but someone else may be able to advise on whether it works in p3d

If they're better than p3d default then I'm keen (in fact I just bought it), any good freeware airports around ? I used to be all tubeliners but this time round I'm having a blast just going low and slow around NZ in GA, my flying is too pants to try a warbird yet
I have the A2A T6 for FSX (which I have installed but not opened yet) and the P3D P40 they've made free for the pandemic, the T6 and possibly a spitfire for P3D are on the shopping list, so it'll happen, but maybe not just yet :)

Orbx up and running and I once I'd got the damn thing to start I flew the A2A V-Tail from NZQN across the top to Milford Sound. Scenery looked so good, I never bothered with it before but suddenly I understand why custom scenery ... And the approach into NZMF, oh good lord, first time I've landed there and I figured the sensible approach was to let down over the Tasman then fly back up the fjord - right from the time I got back between the cliffs the GTN was screaming at me so loudly that I could hardly hear the engine, that was genuinely exciting !

That’s a great flight. One I’ve done many times probably better with Orbx scenery than with MSFS as Mitre Peak is missing.
The A2A Texan and Bonanza are my favourite aircraft in P3D as well as their Cherokee and 182. Hopefully they will transition to MSFS

ORBX SI ans NI and airports, per Naki's posts.
Also have Rob / Godzone P3D-compatible airports & scenery.
As well as Flightbeam WGT as well.
All work well together.
I think the old TaupoX and HamiltonX might still work in P3D v4.5 -- I'd need to check -- but I haven't used my sim for *ages*

From what I found last night on the test flights I did out of NZQA / NZAR / NZWP, those airports in the orbx NI and SI packs without any other addons are absolutely head and shoulders above the default and will do me nicely for now. Thanks all for the input !
