What New Zealand Airport Is That Please?

Postby Aharon » Sun Sep 06, 2020 4:50 am

Shalom and greetings all my pals,

Just saw first episode of new The Sounds tv show set in small New Zealand town of Pelorus. The opening scenes show a lady riding on unidentified airline Cessna C208 to arrive at an unidentified local airport.

Judging from the airport's nice small terminal, I tried to look for airports near Pelorus and see only two airports. The first one is Picton whose terminal does not match the airport in the tv show. The other is NZWB Blenheim airport also known as Woodbourne airbase or Marllborough airport but its terminal looks too big compared to the terminal in the tv show.

Does anybody have any idea what other airport in the area of The Sounds that has regular Cessna C208 airline service, please?

To assist you in answering my question, I am posting three screenshots of the opening scenes of the tv show with explanations accompanying each of three screenshots that I hope will help any of you to identify the airport.

This is final runway approach scene

The first terminal photo looks like North Shore (NZNE) and the second appears to be Whangarei (NZWR) neither of which are anywhere near the Marlborough Sounds but I guess that's 'movie magic'. The aircraft is also a Barrier Air aircraft and they only operate in the upper North Island. (including flying to both North Shore and Whangarei)

The Sounds, is a joint Canada-New Zealand production. It's a suspense thriller, created by Kiwi author Sarah-Kate Lynch, that has a fictional story-line set against the stunning backdrop of New Zealand's Marlborough Sounds.

However it is mainly filmed in and around the Auckland area with only a few actual location scenes filmed in the top of the South Island Marlborough Sounds in 2019.

Have to agree in part with FlyingKiwi, that the actual whole Airport Terminal scene sequence was filmed at Dairy Flat, North Shore Aerodrome NZNE north of Auckland and is not representative of the real life Marlborough Sounds Picton Aerodrome NZPN at Koromiko, Marlborough as it's purely a fictional story that's mainly filmed in Auckland.

Along with the Cessna Grand Caravan (C208) belonging to Barrier Air as the filming was done at their base at NZNE.

Here is the actual Google Street view image taken in 2012 of the same building that was used to represent the fictional Terminal Building actually at North Shore Aerodrome NZNE.

Aerial shots of the Marlborough Sounds from the interior looking out over of the area were likely filmed using the Sounds Air Cessna Caravan and edited through the magic of Film editing to make it look like it was landing in the Marlborough Sounds area. In actuality it was only just flying in the area not landing.

NZ and Canada combine for The Sounds

Flyingkiwi,

Thanks so much for your answers. It utterly amazes me that you manage to identify two local airports!!! Blew my mind!!!

Radar88,

Thank you so much for cool explanatons, hyperlinks, and the photo of the same airport terminal.

Flyingkiwi and Radar88,

Surprised me that film studio would pick two airports in North Island instead of either of 2 airports in the area of Sounds especially the tv show shows so many amazing scenes of towns, wharfs, beaches, water areas, and restaurants in the Sounds area but would be foolish enough to pick 2 airports in North Island!!!!!

Comparing The Sounds tv show to 800 Words tv show, the latter is far better in plots, more fun, and more entertaining with lots of gorgeous ladies BUT the former is more superior in beautiful sceneries even though with very dull and boring plots or actions. So I am going to continue watching The Sounds just for the purpose of beautiful sceneries.

Regards,
