and a view from the ground , and the offical blurb "New Zealand soldier watching supplies being dropped from 41 Squadron Bristol Freighter NZ5906, over the Borneo jungle. East Malaysia, Borneo Island. Drop zone was W62 'Jambu' in Sarawak, East Malaysia (Borneo Island), which was manned by troops of Number 1 Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment. Circa August 1965"

Note, the Freighter had a toilet ...with a door! something our C-130's wont have until the new one's arrive

We'd done Indonesia, Malaya and Borneo before Vietnam started. That's why our guys (and the Aussies I guess :D ) were so highly respected in Vietnam. We fought the counter insurgency war far better than anybody and probably on par with the ROK forces.

Thanks for looking Nick, I have to admit I knew nothing about this part of RNZAF history and this photo resource has been great for finding out more.

Sort of an area of interest for me. NZ had no air assets in Vietnam per se. The Freighters would operate a shuttle service out of Singapore but they never directly supplied combat operations.
Back to Malaya and Indonesia... that's a different story. Bristols, Venoms, Canberras all hand in hand with the British and Australians. It was that involvment in counter insurgency that lead us to join 1ATF in Vietnam
