Installing VLC in FSX SE

Postby Pato » Mon Oct 24, 2016 12:20 pm

I am having trouble installing VLC. Reading the Installation Instructions I can see what the problem is but am too dumb to fix it. I have my OS on an SSD, and I want to install
VLC onto my 1TB Drive, where FSX SE is installed. I did have FSX Gold installed on my SSD but uninstalled it as I thought I may have problems with FSX SE. What is the best way for
me to fix the problem please?.

I do have four files : I wonder with permission I could send these thru , a total of 567MB .

VectorLandClass
VectorLandClass_DTM
VLC_Airfields
VLC_Libraries

I have simply copied them from my FSX HD folder to my P3D HD , placing into 'Addon Scenery' and activated them and done, if it worked that way going into FSX STEAM would be a breeze.

I get the notice "Unable to find FSX install path in System Registry. The installer is not able to proceed with the installation. Please refer to the installation manual"

Exactly the problem , I simply transferred my Captain Sim 737 ... so still to test that out regard to saving flights but all and all it works fine... so your VLC should work fine this way.

Ok, two suggestions:
First, I know that Tim has been looking for testers for his new installer, try contacting him though the Vector Landclass site.

Otherwise, it is obvious that the FSX uninstall worked fine, well done:) However when you installed FSX-se, it saw that there was either an FSX install there, or it saw that it had been installed previously (depending on whether you installed FSX-se before uninstalling FSX). So although this can be fixed (you could try the Flight1 Registry fix) you might be better of having the new VLC installer which knows where FSX-se is.

I think I tried to explain how the FSX-se installer works, but it is tricky.
When installing FSX-se, it tries hard to emulate a normal FSX installation, by using all the default registry and file locations. However if it thinks that there might already be an FSX install, it creates a whole new registry and file location, specific to FSX-se.
So in the first case, a lot of installers won't notice that it isn't a normal FSX, and will go ahead and install.
In the second case, most installer will not know that it exists, so there are a few solutions:

Get a new installer;
Get Estonia Migration tool, this helps with all sims and all addons, so is worth having anyway;
Or for a quick and dirty fix, run the Flight1 registry fix, and point FSX to FSX-se -- not a great solution, as you'll need to activate VLC yourself, but it should work.

Thanks for your help. When my head stops spinning I will endeavour to try your suggestions. Would it help if I reinstalled FSX Gold back to my SSD.?

No, whether or not it's installed won't affect FSX-se.

That is interesting and would be simply if that was possible. I am beginning to get very frustrated with Steam.

Surely there must an 'Addon Scenery' folder so the rest would be easy.

Bear in mind that just copying VLC files over won't work at all, not to even get into the breach of EULA:)

Have you emailed Tim about a new installer?

Exactly why I ask to get permission , 'PROVE of PURCHASE' is the primary.
