ANZ 789 at Wellington

Postby NZ255 » Wed Jun 29, 2016 4:34 pm

Just got an alert on FlightRadar of a 789 at WN!

NZ1912, running an hour late no less.

Unfortunately it's heading in the wrong direction for me to see it. Runway 16 in use.
Listening on the scanner they requested taxiing to A11 (34 end) and back tracking to the other end (16). Strange??

The Alpha taxiway is closed between A5 and A6 so I would assume that they couldn't get out that way past the fire station and possibly the wingspans/ESWL is too great for the Alpha taxiway, or warmup times on the engines.

Another thing Nick, if it is a test, only lightly 9 at loaded in Wellington , a 787 would have sufficient room even with a tail wind , pedal to the medal probably be off before its return past the fire station. B-)

Ian the jets don't take tailwinds at WLG unless they absolutely have to. And in this case the only thing lightly loaded is the fuel tanks. :batman:

They have jiggled a 777 in and around Welly ... and was it to fly off on this runway, the aircraft types, dimension wise are similar .. why put a 787/9 into Welly anyway so if being a test would be lightly loaded.

Nah I don't know anything about this flight. http://www.thenzsource.com I would check here later tonight/tomorrow too see if it comes up.

That bit of the taxiway has been closed since the strong winds/rain on the 12th.

If you want more information about why they went this way http://aip.net.nz/pdf/NZWN_53.1_53.2.pdf there's quite abit there about how to move larger aircraft around WLG

It's sorta big - I think the large windows throw off the scale...

Here's a 787-8 vs a 737-(300?)

Ok, maybe that's cheating

We did the compare a few years back and your are right, the windows the size out even that QATAR photo show's the 737 in the background , a few years back old Queenie landed ... well she didn't :P , a leased British Airways 777 into Welly 787 is comparable in size.

Yeah, I did it but sadly I wasn't allowed to put it up for public viewing. A bit of a pity really as I thought it was quite a nice one, but maybe I'm biased!!
