Building a new Old airport

Postby Kiwia1spad » Tue Jun 07, 2016 8:01 pm

Hi all,
I am experimenting with ADE 9.x as i have gone back to FS9 to fly classic airliners. It got me inspired after downloading 80% of the Cal Classic retro scenery and AI traffic.
There is an excellent 1962 edition Whenuapai, but it got me thinking, why not wind back the clock on other NZ airports. Im starting with Auckland International for some reason. It has been excluded from the 1962 Whenuapai scenery, and i am also going to try and wind back Dunedin, to its 1960s opening look, and also maybe NZCH at some point further down the line, and Wellington Rongatai, though it could take a while. This way i can happily fly my fs9 Viscount, F-27 and other classic airliners around NZ with no modern traffic.
My question to the scenery guys around here, how do you get buildings to show up once they are placed in ADE and compiled? I have all the settings in my FS9 isntall correct but buildings do not show.
Cheers team

I will need to take a complete step back in time, this be going 10 plus years back since I built custom models and placing .. back then it was all guess work with placement of models , tho many of those could be imported to FSX aftera FS9 build but no ground polygons , be interesting to see what may work.

I built my own custom models , library stuff is fine , biggest thing is photo material and if you can't get it ... study the target area, really look at the texture and window panels and such .. edit if required .. I am very sure ( I know) you could reproduce a retro airport super easy.

I really hate .. one said to me Years back ... It looks so NODDY LAND ... quiet a NZ scenery's look like that , I prefer the extra effort!

I have a large ClassicFS9.1 with all the CalClassic AI ,and most of the airport sceneries. The developers there do good research, and do not create stuff which did not exist in different eras. AFAIK, Whenuapai was the international airport for Auckland, but as the bigger jets began to appear it was too small to be expanded , so NZAA was built with longer runways. Same at Wellington, after the flying boats stopped. I don't know enuff to comment on other fields like Dunedin, but even that was moved to a new site, above sea level.
You are right to avoid default/generic buildings.

It would be an interesting project ... rebuild retro airports , arty farty enough , done the modeling before ... texture sheets .. crikey ! I could really return peoples back .. that would be a real fun project.

The CalClassic guys - a growing crowd - have done heaps of great work building retro stuff, and a lot of it has been converted to FSX standards as well.
In my FSClassic, I could fly pilotage +NDBs all the way from Shannon towards Oz, and on to Whenuapai.

Yup 1965 NZAA was opened, Rongatai was built at a similar time for the same reason, Dunedin was moved to Momona in the 60's from Taieri because it was too close to the hills for the Viscounts to climb out successfully especially in the event of an engine failure after takeoff.
Momona (is actually lower than Taieri and is closer to the flood plain of the Taieri and Waipori Rivers. There are pics of the 1980 Taieri Floods showing all the rental cars parked on the airside ramp at Momona and pretty much everywhere else is under water

I nearly used Taieri for the screenie comp, but I couldn't get the submarine in there.
You are obviously on-the-ball with what existed when, that's great. Did you know one of the CC developers uploaded a lovely retro airport, installed and enjoyed by heaps of us, and about three months later, put up a very apologetic post to say he had just realised he had modelled the airport in mirror image? Nobody asked him to correct it.
Take care :D

I did not realize that had happened... but yes being an aviation buff and dunedin local i love going through the Otago aviation history, There is still talk down here that the RNZAF buried a couple of Vincents, Vildebeasts and possibly remains of a Hudson somewhere within the old Taieri Station boundaries. but the last time they went looking noting was found.
I know there was some aerial photos taken of RNZAF Taieri during the mid-late 50's early 60's showing the whole airport layout, with the correct runway lengths. It would be fun to get that image and the details to re-create RNZAF Taieri from the TAF era

I do have a photo early directly above photo of Mangere, the book was published in 1974 , so this must be early 1970 , only B/W tho.

Ive been doing some research on finding more about the TEAL base at Mechanics Bay, and also Hobsonville so one can eventually build the Flying boat bases there, id love to do a wind back scenery of Mechanics Bay and Hobsonville to go with FSX and FS9, thankfully i have found a few things online, and the RNZAF proboard forum has given up some good things. I have some pics and layouts so i might start with a basic mechanics bay with the slip way and hard stands
