Palmerston North - WIP (Any photos?

Postby ablaimckerrow » Sat Jun 04, 2016 12:16 am

Hey Guys, as you can see myself and a buddy have started work on Palmerston North. We've got the basics layed out, and looking for some reference photos. We've already got some pictures (could do with better ones).

Hope you enjoy the shots, and any help is appreciated.

Cheers!

Ah the outer terminals (airside) is going through a face lift at the moment and may have not been finished yet. I'm not too sure when I'm next there but if I do I'll try and grab some airside shots

Looking good! I don't have any photos, but I do know that there's a very nice 0.125metre aerial of the airport on the LINZ site.

Off ya go Rob, get that photo layed down and autogened , keep the "boom chugger lugger going" ... then the Dash 8 boys can practice the approach ... and give some incentive to the airport build :)

Honestly, making photo scenery is the easiest job there is, why else would I make so much of it? You can even choose to download LINZ imagery as WGS84, which overcomes the need to reproject for resampling. So anyone can do it. Ok, maybe not anyone, probably my mum would have trouble...

Arr yes but you have to own the program the places the photo, fine to do the Autogen .... that comes with with SDK parcel , thinking about I should post the incomplete Mot and New Plymouth simply not to loss it but give an opening for a newbie to give AGN a go. B-)

Kelvin has done most of the AGN for NZ all you need to do is place the photo scenery in the scenery folder with Kelvins AGN in the texture folder.
I have made a NZ Photo scenery folder and placed most of my photo scenery in it with Kelvins AGN in the texture folder and it works fine thanks to Kelvin all the NZ AGN is done.
All that is needed now is for someone to do the models for it and place it in the same folder and we could have most of NZ done in a reasonably high res photo scenery and that would make ORBX NZSI and NZNI redundant.

I could with that , but complete airports build require me having a real job then go back to what I did as hobby , I can honestly now say - I don't think ORBX realised how many designers and artists all glue into such a concentrated area ... this showed in the first few years ...... specific, WE ALL using AIP/VFG charts were it was WILLY NILLY and the expense for ORBX , looks pretty and looked like Canterbury but the elevations really are a cause for concern ... so for being accurate ... ME .. both VFR and IFR work with photo-real so it gives you that option but when required to rebuild primary airport because the MESH is super hi re .. Um Yeah ! back to the old argument , I just potter around not doing any real simming due to this ..... I would love a complete photo-real NZ .. I simply delete ORBX ... but it has to be HI RESOLUTION as with what Rob's REAL NZ? GODZONE produces .

Yes, you do need to own the SDK tools, which come with the Pro version of FSX, or you can download the P3D v1 SDK from the web, I think. You do need some way to get your downloaded tiles into a GeoTIFF or some other useful format, so something like the free QGISwould be useful. There are costly alternatives, which make life a lot easier, but they are not required. In the old days, Global Mapper supplied older versions of their $500 tool for a flat price of US$200, which was a good choice if you earned money from scenery, but they gave that up some time ago.

Big thanks for all your replies and recommendations. While the Modelling is in full swing, so is the ground polygon. They are all going to be custom made. We've got some pretty good information from a user who says he flew in a couple weeks ago, and just provided some key points - ie (the markings are not yellow; they are now nearly white.) Which is a big help. We will keep sending you WIP shots!

That is a good idea! :) It keeps the NZFF interest and It sticks in the mind of people when suddenly you photo's ... it also keep you going, an incentive to keep working on the airport project. B-)

Umm the gate markings are being updated due to the building process, and should be going back to yellow. Ie ICAO standard.

Nice work!
NZPM was gonna be my next NZ airport, I'm glad someones finally doing it!
Google street view has images of buildings and that which maybe helpful. NZPM was one of those airports where google drove their street view car through, most airports they don't drive through for some reason. Might be some help! :D

That is not a bad idea , you get a measure of the texture, most all building material is the same ... so for you glazed units / doors wander the streets of you local city area and photo those :wink2: , then a little photo-shop photo magic ... The one time consuming area ! .. is in building custom models is the textures, the models are easy.

You're right Ian! The buildings are the most time consuming part. I model extra stuff now like guttering, window sills/panes some interiors so that part takes a while now too!

I'd rather have a little effort on a primary target rather than splattered library objects and in words said to me 15 years ago making it look like Noddy Land. Use those Library objects maybe 20/30 % in the main base scenery, one then can remove and build on it again.

Ahhh the Man himself! haha many thanks for the positive feedback. Yeah, we have looked around Google street view, and it has been very helpful. Would love some tips on your ground poly's as they look absolutely breath-taking.

Cheers
