ATC streams form any NZ Airports

Postby flamer » Mon Jan 11, 2016 2:10 pm

Hi All,

I'm a student pilot currently doing my x-country rating. I am wondering if anyone knows where I could get some streams from airports around New Zealand? I used liveatc.net for a bit, but nothing is allowed from NZ? Plus most of those airports they cover are all big ones that are mostly IFR, I'm trying to practise the art of reading back VFR arrival and departure instructions. I have found a couple of youtube videos of people doing circuits inside CTR's which I can hear the ATC so that has been useful, but anyone have any more sources for this? I have 70 hours logged by my local aerodrome is unattended so ATC is new to me :)

Mainly interested in NZHN, NZRO, NZWN and around these areas.. But keen on anything really!

Umm its against the law to record ATC conversations and put them on TV/YouTube and people have been prosecuted (TV3) from memory.

Probably the best way to do it is to head to the tower of your able too and sit in there ( with their approval) and listen to the conversations taking place. Also if there's a down time then the controller will be able to discuss with you what they are looking for.

Just get a receive only scanner and sit somewhere near an airport. Don't need to go up to the tower although it is beneficial if you're trying to learn and most controllers from my experience enjoy having pilots visit if you bring a pack of biscuits. Just make sure you call first.

Yeah thought so, but there are a few videos on youtube where the GoPro is capturing the audio feed aswell >buck<

I live in central Auckland, so assuming Auckland and Whenuapai wouldn't be too welcoming the nearest is Hamilton, so bit of a drive and not sure if a scanner would get that far!

this one is particularly good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpbFeaCb4X4

Don't discount Auckland. I was stuck in Christchurch with weather one day and so I rang up the tower from where the helicopter was parked and they welcomed me up there with open arms. Really good bunch of guys and girls. Don't forget that a lot of controllers are also pilots. Can't hurt to ask.

can anyone explain to me what control means when they say join left hand down wind? Are they referring to the fact the circuit is a left hand circuit?
