Carenado DO228 on the way :)

Quite a few of these ugly workhorses fly around NZ.

I hope this also means that their AeroCommander is close to the finish line.

I flew one of these nearly 20 years ago in the Marshall Islands when I was trying to get a job with Air Marshall Islands

I did not realise that any ever operated in New Zealand

Very interesting aeroplane though, really a very fast twin otter

I wonder if you are confusing the 228 with the GAF Nomad?

There were a few Nomads in New Zealand and they look similar to the 228. I flew Nomads many years ago out of Queenstown. The airline I flew for considered the 228 but they were horrendously expensive which I why I didn't think any were ever operated in New Zealand.

Here is a photo of one of the Nomads I flew

It's a poor mans Twin Otter :D

Good heads up , thank you... i like the looks of the 228, will certainly join my hanger.
A nice Nomad would also be good.
Picked up their (Carenado) Navajo last night , now they may get a little more cash from me  Oh well , life is short ...

There were at least 3 Do228s in NZ but none were operated here for long. A short lived airline that flew from Welington to Napier had a couple. Air West Coast also had one for a while. Iirc one of our members use to fly it. Edit: there were actually 4. See links below

Not the prettiest thing to take to the skies is it...I think it is the droopy snout.

I think a Nomad would have hit the shores a long time back ... Rebecca Gibney as the flight attendant ... OOOoo YEAH !

Yup, my mistake, it's not these Dorniers but the Nomads in NZ - I've seen a quite few of those in Milford Sounds, and Queenstown a couple of years back.

August 27 1995 I did 50 minutes in V7-9207 around Majuro, which must be the plane you can see in the background as they only had 2.

I did not realise there was one operated by West Coast Air, I do remember Transair but my memory is they were very short lived

They sure are an unusual looking plane, mind you Dornier have really specialised in unusual looking aeroplanes.

The 228 was really touted as a Twin Otter replacement. It had the stol capabilities of a twin otter and it could fly at 190 knots where as a twin otter is pretty much flat out at 140.

Unfortunately they cost twice as much as a twin otter and about ten times what a Nomad cost

Great information everyone

I really hate airshow music , one could tell its an old vid 30 years just by the aircraft on the ground.
