Current Godzone plans...

The official REAL NZ support forum

Currently I've been building dual FSX/Prepar3D installers for existing Real NZ and Godzone scenery. Nelson and Supercity are released, along with Godzone Hokitika. There's still Southern Lakes and Tauranga/Rotorua to go, along with a lot of Godzone freeware. These will take a bit longer, because they all are scheduled for a proper update.

Those of us who have been following Doug's brilliant West Coast Towns project would know that the impetus for this is a resurgence in cheap, available aerial images for New Zealand, courtesy of LINZ. They are in the process of making this available online, and this week they released the entire North Island. This is of variable resolution and quality, ranging from some 10cm cities and towns, through 25cm urban areas, to 50cm or 1metre rural areas.

Some of this was previously available for a fee, such as the images I'm using for Wellington at the moment.

The South Island will follow in a few months, although I think that the South Island coverage won't be quite as complete. In the meantime I'll be looking at ways to update my older stuff, which relies on much lower resolution images. Hopefully there will be some usable imagery for Wanaka and Tekapo, but first up with new imagery, plus a dual installer, and hopefully both Vector Land Class and Orbx compatibility, will be Rotorua. For a while now I've been giving Rotorua away with some purchases of Tauranga, simply because it was due for an update. I've taken it off the Store now until it is updated. Existing owners will get a free update. For others, this will revert to full price.

I'd like to improve the Tauranga city image at some stage. I've also been looking at some areas for VLC-compatible local updates, similar to Doug's West Coast project. Really, anyone could do this sort of thing, although there are some rather esoteric tools required, so it isn't for the faint-hearted.

I've been trying out a few areas, one example is Raglan, which already has a nice airfield from Mike, which I always though could benefit from an aerial image -- it's an interesting landscape:

When Wellington is finished (don't ask...) I hope to have the pick of the country for the next project. This is shaping up to be a great time for NZ simming, with Prepar3D being developed into the future, and some great resources for scenery developers.

Most of the South Island except for the southern alps is now available but not for download but you can order it and have it placed on an external drive for free all you need is to supply a return paid pack.
If anyone wants to get the South Island imagery now flick me a PM and I will give you the guy at LNZ contact details.

Thanks for this Rob and Doug. Looks like some great updates are planned.

On my last trip to NZ I left with about twelve DVDs worth of LINZ orthophotos and maps but that coverage is all quite old now so it's great to see the newer imagery becoming available.

I've been playing with photoreal a bit myself lately so have shot them a mail to ask about getting hold of the new Auckland coverage.

A similar coverage to Supercity can be downloaded at 50cm, approx 6GB. The entire 50cm area is 12GB. (These are JPGs, so probably equate to about 100GB of TIFFs.)

There's also some higher resolution stuff, including the North Shore at 7cm, but you'd need to have a good data plan to download that...

EDIT: Here's the LINZ info on courier delivery.

Great, thanks for that Rob. Fortunately I have a fast line and no limitations on data, although the physical distance can sometimes prove an issue for download speeds.

I think that's my weekend sorted! clapping.gif thumbup1.gif

Very much looking forward to Rotorua! I fly into and out of that airport (in FSX) all the time!

Would be neat to see someone knock up a photoreal mask for Whangarei Harbour. At low tide it opens up a myriad of different depth channels and sand banks which would look great alongside VLC/ORBX terrain textures!

That would definitely be worthwhile. There are a lot of small areas which would really add a lot having a masked photo as a base.

By the way, looking at your photo, the other major feature is the cloud shadows, and Lockheed Martin have today announced that Prepar3D 2.2 is just a few weeks away, and will include cloud shadows.

Yeah saw that Rob, pretty cool news.

Other Northland areas of interest that I've noticed in the real world are the Tutukaka Coast beaches, Ngunguru Sandspit and the Whangaroa Harbour just up from the Bay of Islands.

It would be great to have 'live' water, with proper tides, and not just for Scottish places like Barra and Dundee, either

Could I possibly bribe you with the sacrifice of a virgin sheep to make a small patch for Auckland to add the new A380 terminal? Ok ok it doesn't have to be a sheep, it can be a goat or a squirrel or a badger or or or maybe a ninja possum hell bent on killing us all??

Ok the badger was a bit far fetched you can't get them here, but that possum keeps looking at me weird....

Maybe if I could choose the possum... (There's one that jumps down from the roof onto my bedroom deck every night, and scares the bjs out of me.)
A few changes to bring NZAA a bit more up to date sounds like a job for one of the locals.
