FSX Install

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Hi,
unsure.gif It looks like I maybe forced to do a new install ( for some reason will not start up -have even gone back and restored but still no luck).
I recall somewhere seeing or hearing that one can install FSX on say C drive and all other apps, scenery, aircraft etc on say D drive!
Can anyone shed some light on this for me before I start the long and drawn out process of installing again...........
Many thanks unsure.gif

Yes, you can certainly install scenery anywhere you wish, the Scenery.cfg can point anywhere. The tricky bit is actually getting an installer to put it in the right place. Generally it is simpler (i.e. less likely to cause issues) if scenery is installed relative to FSX -- that is, the folder placed inside the FSX folder, or in a subfolder of the FSX folder.

So it does make more sense to do things this way, as it stops any issues with updates, uninstalls etc. Installing something into FSX then shifting it somewhere else is the kind of thing which can make updates difficult.

The least dangerous way to shift scenery to another drive is to use symbolic links. Symlinks allow you to shift any folder anywhere, and create a link back to where it came from. For example, you can shift your main Scenery folder (that is, the folder with the World/Global etc subfolders) to another drive, and create a symlink back to your FSX folder. The folder and all it's contents will for all intents and purposes be back where it came from, even though it is physically on a different drive. So if you get an installer which wants to add files to any of these folders (such as the elevation changes which normally go in FSX\Scenery\World\Scenery) the installer will still find it in the proper place.

For a lot more information on symlinks, just google it. Adding 'FSX' to the search will narrow it down to more relevant applications.
