A new Stick of Joy!

After owning a succession of various Joysticks since the early 1980's, including the MS Sidewinder, various Logitek, etc, my latest Saitek Cyborg Evo Force has recently been giving me problems with random triggering of the various buttons when forcing the stick to the extreme of its movements*.

So, today I rushed out to replace it with my new joystick: Saitek Cyborg Fly 5...>>> http://www.cyborggaming.com/prod/v5stick.htm

Quite a nice piece of kit, compact and light, and does all that is required of it (£40)!
USB power, rather than the heavy Power Pack Brick required for the Evo Force.

Its worth noting the the Saitek FLY 5 Joystick does not contain the Force-feedback components like the Saitek Cyborg Evo Force Joystick, but I don't use the force-feedback anyway...I always found it rather annoying!

Just reprogrammed the buttons in the Assignments option to work the same as my previous Joystick....so all is good to go!

Paul, in the light of your self-confessed Telling it Like it Is:
No FFB on a stick is like... well I could tell you, but this is a family forum!
There may be times when you don't *need* it, but then you can disable it.

Best experience is a properly configured FFB aircraft, TrackIR, and some Bush Flying.

I still have my original MS Sidewinder FFB stick in a cupboard somewhere, in the faint hope that someone will make it compatible with 2013 computers...

Actually.....having flown a real Cessna 150 and 152 Aerobat a few times on both soft and hard surfaces, I quickly realised that the experience of force-feedback in a computer joystick is nothing like the real thing!

In an aircraft, most of the various gravity forces are spread all over the body, on the ground and in the air, mainly from the seat and floor, and some on the hands via the stick/yoke.

Trying to simulate g-forces and vibration via the hands alone on a force-feedback joystick doesn't really work, and feels unnatural!

You really need a full motion seat, and even then, it doesn't fully replicate all the g-forces experienced in a real aircraft.

For those reasons I ignored the Force-feedback in my joysticks altogether, many years ago, and just pretend that I am vibrating all over in the flight sim...(which can be exciting!).... ....!

...also the new non-force-feedback joystick is somewhat cheaper and lighter than my alternative one, with the force-feedback...(which is nice on the pocket!)...!

For flying experiences you just cant beat a REAL aeroplane!

Force feed-back-less Flight Simming is a joy after riding 50+ miles on my Motor-bike.... ...!

Crikey many years ago .. last century it was i grabbed the CH products F-16 combat stick love every thing about it except I'm left handed ... and today do you think they make hi-end left handed sticks nope hence my change to yokes well over a decade back .

I had 2 MS Sidewinder FFB 2 Joysticks gave one away and I am still using the other and it works fine with my new PC I built January 2013

...although its too late now, you may be interested to know that my lovely old Saitek Cyborg Evo Force was specifically designed for both righties and lefties!

It could be assembled in either form to suit either hand, and the throttle could be operated with either hand easily!
It is full of all sorts of adjustments. A wonderful piece of kit...(no longer produced)!

Its just a shame that it has started to play up after much daily use, and I've had to abandon it!

My new Saitek Cyborg FLY 5 is really only suitable for righties, 'cos the throttle(s) is on the left hand side, and cant be changed....and it doesn't "rumble".... ...!

...but I am a RIGHTIE!... ...!

Both the one I gave away and the one I am using now are the MS Sidewinder FF2 models and are USB

The one you have must be the sidewinder FFB precession pro mine is the next model up sidewinder FFB 2 Pro which came out with USB
You can get a games port USB adapter for the FFB precession Belkin F3U200-08INCH DB15 8-Inch USB Joystick Adapter for SideWinder they are available from Amazon or Ebay

Have the cyborg X. Love the dual throttle. Did have an issue with teh Twist Rudder , took me a few weeks to work out that is what it was. Wasnt a hard fix. The pot is mounted on the bottom of the stick. Has two tabs and a bit of glue holds it there, Just prised it off with screwdriver, came off easy enough, just dont break the tabs, Than removed teh inner adjuster and re bent the wipers to add some more tension , pressed back in and so far no problems. What happened is it would show the rudder off to one side, id unplug and replug and it would come good, thought is was dying on me.

Having replaced my very nice, worn-out Saitek Cyborg Evo Force with my new Saitek Cyborg X...(Fly 5), and having noticed that it has TWO "throttle" controls...AND a "trim wheel" control, I am left with wondering how to assign them to perform; Throttle + Mixture/Throttle + Propeller...and the "trim wheel" to perform Elevator trim?
The Assignments list only allows for keyboard button presses...NOT analogue control assignments!

The Throttle analogue control is assigned automatically on start-up, so how do you assign one lever to Throttle, and the other lever to Mixture/Propeller?
..similarly, assign the analogue joystick Trim Wheel to Elevator trim. (which are normally button presses; button 7/1!).

..any ideas, Chums?.... ..!

I have a Gravis Gamepad, use the mouse wheel on that for elevator trim, and have the wheel on the joystick assigned to the rudder trim in the FSX Joystick profile. USe FSUIPC for calibration.

Finally got the assignments problem confusion sorted out on the joystick!.... ....>>>

Menu > Controls > Assignments > "Joystick Axes"....for the Throttle(s) assignments!..(The right hand throttle is referred to as; "Slider!").

There are two Tabs: "Button Assignments" and "Joystick Axes"

The Joystick Trim Wheel is enabled in "Button Assignments" by wheeling forward for trim down, and wheeling backwards for trim up! (They will be assigned as Button Numbers).
