If you are ever in Central Otago, take some time to stop in at Hayes Engineering Works just out of Oturehua.
100 years old, the workshop still functions, and a more amazing collection of belts pulleys and shafts I have yet to see.
It's hydro-driven too.
Place like this out the back off Banks Peninsular - past Governer s Bay/Chartaris Bay , Orton Bradley park has a similar setup ... first place in Canterbury to have electricity , a lot of it restored and date 1840/50s .. even old drill bits used to make cannons off the period .Last edited by Ian Warren on Mon May 20, 2013 3:47 pm, edited 1 time in total.

.. i know the dangers of old machinery and i taught and warned a few .. then a few got hurt , two serious .. that was pre OSH .. but they are as bad as the fix's in some places .
.. This is still a running bizz and i think its friggen cool , the people no the machine .. still dangerous if caught out or not with it ...
