Suitable joystick

Is the MS Sidewinder joystick suitable for FSX....at least for a beginner like me? I notice that the Logitech Attack 3 joystick seems to be favoured, but I already have the sidewinder and I'd like to start out with that.

I've used a Sidewinder 2 for more than ten years, still going strong (except FF hasn't worked for a while, but I don't miss it). Good for helos.

Yep they are good sticks that use optical sensors instead of 'pots' to measure input- this reduces stuttering that you seem to get on older joysticks. I've got a couple and they seem to come up every now and then on trademe too.

Yes, I have one but I just saw another on on TM very cheap.....I might get than one too because I do like the SW and they will become extinct sooner or later

I use the Cyborg Fly 5 - its the best joystick I have used it only has one USB cable and the best part about it is that it has twin throttles

Joysticks , there is always the option of going the yoke/throttle and rudders , both the CH and Saitek range are superb and very durable .

Well the yoke is great, but i had to modify mine make it more realistic. I personally have a saitek x-45 and a Saitek yoke and rudders. That works very well for fighters and jetliners.

I've been using a Logitech Extreme 3D pro for the last couple of years, it's solid as, very stable, feels good, and looks the part. Also very cheap...

Just while I'm waiting for FSX to arrive I have been doing some research on joysticks etc. It seems that Windoze 7 cannot run the sidewinder joystick. Is that true? I know that MS does some silly things from time to time, but I would have assumed that their own OS (Windows 7) would recognise their own hardware (Sidewinder)......hmmmm

Mine works fine with Windows 7. What sort of connector does it use?

It's USB. I haven't tried it yet, I don't have it with me at the moment, I have to go fetch it next week, but I have been reading all sorts of stories online about Win 7 and Sidewinder being not compatible. I find it hard to believe but it seems that many people have this problem. If you yours works though, then mine should too

I have a Sidewinder force feedback 2 and it works fine with win 7 x 64 had it for years did have two but gave one away about 3 years ago

Mine is a Precision2.....I guess I'll have to wait until next week to see whether it works or not

My first Joystick for the Flight Sims was the 1995 Microsoft Force Feedback Pro. £100 long ago! Used for Looking Glass's; Flight Unlimited II! (I still have it, but faulty).
It uses a Gameport connector, requiring plugging into a "Sound Card" in the computer.

Nowadays, most Joysticks use an USB connector.

Same here deeknow .... nice bit of kit. I have a "thrustmaster topgun fox2 pro" ....bloody hell , what a mouthfull , in the back room just in case.

I had a sidewinder but had no rudder control so I upgraded to a logitec extreme. This one works fine. I got mine on ebay, they seem to be cheap on there

I see that the Logitec is the 'real deal' and I will certainly look to buy one if the SW gives me any trouble. I'll check this all out next week and see what happens.

The SW works just fine.....all the controls seem to work (so far) so I'll keep using this for the time being. Nice that it was recgnised by Win 7 with no issues at all
