Makes for some good reading these posts, there are pros and cons for sure.

My personal informed opinion is I wouldn't touch any social media sites with a barge pole. Personally I treat anything going outside my network as public domain regardless of privacy polices. Food for thought in 2007 cyber-crime overtook drugs as the major source of income for the undesirable types in society Switched.com estimated to worth $105 Billion. A quick Google shows more up to date figures of $114B in 2011 Norton

Some of this is crime is related to identity theft to either target yourself or your employer: when you ring the bank for something how often do they want "security questions" answered to "prove" your identity - about 80% are open source i.e. full name and address - Electoral role, date of birth genealogy sites or register of births, deaths and marriages, mothers maiden name ... you get were I'm coming from. I work on the principle that if nothing is online about me it makes the crims job than much harder and they will go looking else were and if they really wanted to target me and to get my $50 savings they could. (That's not a challenge by the way) biggrin.gif

To quote ZD Net
QUOTE
For every second that goes by, 19 people worldwide fall victim to some form of online crime, most commonly social network hacking and credit card fraud.[/quote] ZD Net

I hope this doesn't sound like a rant, but do I believe people need to be informed; we all share a common interest in Flight Sim so someone reading this post can't be that bad.

laugh.gif thumbup1.gif Nice one! Good come-back. While things like FB are potentially useful, I'd wager that if one could add up the copious hours that many waste on FB one would find that it's almost as wasteful as TV. Except the new gen of couch potatoes multitask: they waste time watching TV while they update FB while they Text while they eat... tongue.gif

Woah, very clever -- using social media to tell people that you don't use social media. Blows my mind, man... ohmy.gif

I'm glad you brought that up, as this is part of the point I was trying to make (albeit facetiously:) I don't see any difference between using NZFF and using Facebook, both have their uses. I am quite certain that my 'post-count' on Facebook over the last six years is a lot lower than your post-count here. The only real difference is that anybody can read my posts here, and only a select few can read them on Facebook.

Some people don't seem to be aware that just because a few people do some crazy things on Facebook, it isn't compulsory to post every little half-thought, or to drive across the US to punch someone who upset you on FB. I've actually been threatened more than once via the 'social media' which is NZFF, to the extent that I've feared for my business. This wouldn't and couldn't happen with Facebook.

OK Rob I know that small (and not so small) businesses find it a good way of advertising, so fair enough, but why does the media have to bang on about it so much? It's all so trivial and shallow. How did they all manage before that, youtube, i-pods and carrying bottles of water everywhere.

The reality is - it's here, it's being used (my a mere 1 billion plus people!), so love it or loathe it, its impossible to ignore.

I use FB to promote photography, I have to have a personal page but it doesn't get a lot of use and I would rather talk to people on the phone or in person rather than use FB.
I just block the people that tell you they are going for a dump then off to the supermarket after lunch!!!

In terms of photography it has been excellent, I used to hate FB not sure why but have changed my ways.
Have made some great contacts through the page and not sure whether I would have otherwise and the pay off for some of these connections will be seen later in the year.
What is also good is that with most cell phones you can post pics straight away, when at airshows, open days etc.
Again at Classic Fighters and later in the year this will come in real handy but have started using FB in ways that I didn't know existed.

Have requests from people every day in regards to photos, and opportunites so that is good to.

So I am a convert, took a while for me to get into it, I get loads more feedback through FB than the forums, and I do love the forums, FB is faster to post photos, as you don't have to muck around with photo bucket etc so its easy to do daily updates etc.

Get some good comments on the page, and some average ones to and its easy to delete posts from dickheads and ban them from the page it I feel I need to and have.

The page has around 12,000 followers and is consistently rising by 400 per week so the word is getting out and I appreciate all of the feedback as that's what helps keep me motivated to carry on.
