Best brand scanner would be Uniden .. unless you can get your hands on a old military valve radio , they are a little hard to carry around tho

I agree with Ian about the valve radio, best quality signals you can get - but disagree about Uniden. I've had 2 unidens over the years and not overly impressed with them.

I ended up getting GME RX 1300 RX1300 and very impressed with it. Does a lot more than just VHF which was part of the reason I got it, goes down to the HF Range and up into the UHF range. I'm about 20 Km from the transmitter site for NZPM and made an aerial that I've mounted on the roof and can listen the ATIS, Tower and ground. then unplug and take it with me, it's a nice size too only slightly bigger than a smartphone, the only drawback it it has no belt clip so sits in a pocket or have to hold it.

Im sure they will have the radio gear installed in later years , in fact security ... maybe they can look at plane spotters as extra security , not that we need it here in the NZ unless some kiddie with a laser pointer .. , but in my mind its not a bad idea ! SECURITY & SAFETY spotters badge and jacket , hey maybe world wide .

NZNR (Napier) TWR 124.8, ATIC 128.0, Unatt 118.1
NZHS (Hastings) Traffic 125.8
NZAP (Taupo) 118.4
Along the Taihape - Taupo road have a listen on 119.6, might hear some aircraft talking to a Army man in an APC.
Whitianga is 124.5
Coromandel is 124.5
Thames is 124.5
Whenuapai is 134.5
North Shore 118.0
Whangarei is 118.6

• Woodbourne Tower: 122.8
• Woodbourne Ground: 118.1
• Woodbourne ATIS: 126.05
• Ohakea Control (Wanganui, Fielding, OH): 120.4

Ohakea Control can be heard perfectly from pretty much everywhere in Wanganui.
