After talking to DA/Aerosoft, it appears the problem is probably a Microsoft one. Severe Googling has revealed numerous '1002' apphangup episodes with many program .exe's involved, just like mine. Apparently how to fix them is still privileged information. So it's out with the flash drive to save my goodies then overwrite XP and give it another go.

Arrrgh ... sounds a bit drastic!!! Do you have a relatively recent XP restore point you could use?

Would re-installing [just] FSX cure it?

It dose almost sound worth buying another HD , put the current one aside as an external file backup and have a complete fresh start .

Got two - 1Tb and 500Gb plus a 64Gb flash. Am trying the reinstall/overwrite of XP first but, if I have to also reinstall FSX, then I'll wipe the drive and start from scratch - AGAIN.

Would your system run Win7? I must admit XP is good ... Vista was a total DOG ... but Win7 really is in the XP mould ... it's *good*.

whathesaid.gif I concur , Win7 takes a little getting use to but in the long run , seems to better with FSX .

I have Win7 x64 running on my FSX system and another copy (x32) on my work laptop. Both have been amazingly stable and required almost no tweaking at all. They (both) do what a good OS should do ... remain totally invisible.

I've always been very quick to criticise Microsoft, but with Win7 it's been hard to find any ammunition sad.gif

I can understand you sticking to XP though, as once you upgrade the OS, you might want to add more RAM ...then maybe that gruntier video card you've always promised yourself ... and before you know it you're $3000 out of pocket!

Since XP was the OS around which FSX was designed, I've always thought it reasonable to stick with it. I'm not a computer person - most of ours have ended up as doorstops but I do enjoy messing with screenshots. My flying days ended years ago so that part of FSX has little or no attraction since its proximity to flying is iffy. Good to hear that Windows 7 is so stable. How Microsoft survived long enough to finally get something right is beyond me. Life is an ongoing amazement.

Law of averages, I think laugh.gif! I have a theory that every alternate release should just go in the bin. Remember Win Me? Hahahahahaha. So ... I won't be falling for Win8 ...

A fully updated/patched XP is till damn' good!

I used to know a very senior Microsoft engineer - and he says there's an elusive bug in the basic network code in Windows (that makes networks sometimes not appear for around 5 minutes - till some process finally times out) ... that was there almost from day one and is still with us today - even in Win7.

I spent a whole weekend with this particular engineer, trying to get an MS SQL server to replicate to another (identical) database server. We never did solve it. It was cheaper in the end to buy another server!
