That is your Sopwith Snipe , ground attack variant the Salamander , the Snipe was famous in combat couple week before WWI ended getting probably the last VC of the war where one aircraft took on 15 Fokker D.VII's .

The pilot was William Barker, (The Snipe is painted in his scheme).
He shot down three of the D.VIIs and their was apparently more than 15, the fight started off with him sighting and attacking a German two seater, but the D.VII pilots in the area saw what Barker was up to.
He was wounded three times during the dog flight but managed to land the aeroplane and survived.
Major Barker was awarded a VC as a result.

I probably should know (or Google it) but what is the basis of the builds for this type of replica here in NZ. Are they made up from local or imported "kit-sets" or are they built from plans etc....?

As an "older" bloke (more mature ?) I find them to be things of rare beauty and craftmanship.

Depends on the aeroplane but all aircraft that are coming out of The Vintage Aviators workshop these days are built as per original plans and all components are made or restored in house.
They are even rebuilding or scratch building original engines.
The D.Va Albatros was built by laser mapping the original example in Australia.

It is out of this world in terms of what these guys are doing.

Bit of an update seeing I have some accurate numbers, as at the end of January we had sold 2400 copies which was well ahead of expectation, a lot sold at Wanaka so not sure as to how many we have sold now so thanks to everyone who has supported the book.

Have had some great photo shoots since the book was published, would have been nice to include photos like this one but thats life.
