She's done!!! ... My first repaint!! Yay!

I'm still not entirely sure whether the top of the fuselage is white or silver/grey ... but it's grey now laugh.gif

Thanks to GDNZ and IW for the help/encouragement thumbup1.gif

Until someone captures it flying inverted so we can see the upper colour scheme this will do nicely. cool.gif
Congratulations on doing such a superb job with the spray can on your first repaint and thanks so much for tackling it. clapping.gif

Anyone know anyone at Ardmore that owns a step ladder? laugh.gif

If Dave updates the model (a paint kit would be nice!!) ... and I end up having a go at it, I may just get in touch with someone <?> that would allow me to take some photos.

It's now live on Flightsim.com: dh89a_zk-aku.zip ... and has racked up 100 downloads just like that!

Available locally: dh89a_ZK-AKU.zip -NZFSIM (around 6.7Mb).

There's a reasonable photo showing her topside here. Looks blue to me.

ZK-AKU at Airliners.net

I've just taken her up for a spin and she's a beauty. The blue cockpit's also a nice touch and makes a pleasant change. This is the 50th repaint I have for the DH.89 including the ones supplied with the FSX version!

Good work! thumbup1.gif clapping.gif

Thanks, Adrian ... I could've sworn I'd seen that pic, but maybe not! I may just tweak the blue/white line just behind the cockpit ... if I find other things to change. Not worth it on its own.

Take a closer look at one of the passengers in the rear ... winkyy.gif

I've just taken dozens of pics of DH-84 ZK-AXI at NZNE, with a view to maybe doing that. The DH-84 (Dragon) does look substantially different to the DH-89a (Rapide) - and I doubt whether anyone's done an FS model of it <???>.

Dave Garwood's had requests in the past, and has said he might do one. Perhaps worth asking again (although not until he's finished the new version of our girl!) biggrin.gif

It was great to see your Dragon shots. I've never seen a DH.84 in real life. I think there must be more airworthy survivors in NZ than the UK. Must get to a few more airshows next time I'm over as I've only ever done Wairarapa and that was only the one year.

Congrats, Adamski on the Rapide livery!

It's great that we have so many talented repainters here that are working to bring us such a wide variety of New Zealand-based liveries for our favourite addons!
It's also nice to see more and more members start to get involved in the addon process, from making planes, to scenery, to liveries. Excellent!

Regardless of the repaint, it's a damn' fine model ... with a perfectly acceptable VC. I've bought payware much worse than this! Can't wait to see what his new version will be like.

Hello all smile.gif

Nice looking repaint Adam. thumbup1.gif

As has been hinted, I am working on an updated Rapide, which should be ready soon-ish, but I'm not giving any definite timescale yet.

Stay tuned...

Thanks for the approval! My turn to welcome *you* notworthy.gif ... many people here on NZFF have enjoyed your aircraft - and I'm sure will continue to do so! As you can see, there's quite a DH89 fan club here winkyy.gif

That looks absolutely superb, Dave! Like v2 to v3, a huge leap forward. The amount of flight hours I've clocked up in that seat, I'll be seeing that view an awful lot... and I can't wait to start flying her!

Do you know yet whether it'll be compatible with all the existing repaints?

Good luck with the new version thumbup1.gif clapping.gif thumbup1.gif clapping.gif

Hi Adrian,

sorry, existing repaints won't be compatible due to the extensive reworking of the exterior. The overall layout will be the same (apart from the engines & extra some parts) but the new model has fully modelled ribbing in the wings & control surfaces instead of relying on the textures, making that redundant.

There will be a paint kit, either with the release or shortly after.

BTW, if anyone has any specific feature requests, please let me know. I'm not promising I'll be able to incorporate them, but I'll see what can be done if within reason. smile.gif

A little request , maybe some stairs to help the passengers in and a few old suitcases and crates of cargo , most here would be full of Whitebait smile.gif

Accusim!!! laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Seriously though, Dave - that VC looks *incredible*. I daren't think about how many hours went into it (and the externals). I suppose that'll be offset by the 1,000s of hours that people all over the world will enjoy flying it.

From a repainter's P.O.V., my only wish is that (if possible) you include a decent "annotations" layer to each file in your paintkit. It only takes a short while at source, but really does help *a lot* when trying to work out a [new] repaint. A raft of good repaints makes an aircraft really popular - the DH89 is a much loved aircraft, so I expect the repainters will be busy!

EDIT: Just a thought. Some aircraft (eg. Ant's Eaglet) use a clever system whereby model features/variations (like spats, cowls, fairings etc.) can be toggled simply by including a code in the title in aircraft.cfg. I've no idea how it works - or how hard it is to code, but it works well from a user's P.O.V. I suspect that most Rapides were modified one way or another - either with cockpit enhancements or external details. If you're planning on a few variations, this might be a way of incorporating them.

Thinking about it, I'd much rather have an exterior with these little details modelled in so this is brilliant news. It's such a popular plane, I expect most of the repaints will be redone to match anyway given time, especially with a paintkit. I can always keep the old version around for any that aren't.

These would be great:

1. Opening cockpit windows.
2. Escape hatch in the roof (if there's a convincing way of modelling it. I think you are meant to just tear it open).
3. Opening luggage locker door.
4. Hope you're keeping on the floatplane variant. Apparently some of the Canadian ones also operated on skis... this would be great, although I've never found a photo of one!

The leading letter in title= to activate/deactivate various features was very useful so also hope this, or something like it will be carried over into the new version.

Thanks, keep up the good work!
