FSX Hangs Up And Ctd

Information and support relating to this forthcoming New Zealand Vector Land Class addon.

Hmm actually, looking again at where the problems are/aren't happening perhaps the objects aren't at fault since the problems occur when the libraries aren't active and there is a good spread of the objects around the country (with exception of the wind farm models)

Steve, perhaps you can check by unticking the default and VLC library options in the config tool, applying then exiting and then confirming they have indeed been moved to the 'Inactive' folder within the VectorLandClass/Scenery folder (they are titled 'StandardLibrary_xxxx.bgl and CustomLibrary_xxxx.bgl where xxxx is a tile number). Then re-do a flight. If it still crashes then it isn't caused by those.

I'm a little suspect about the GEX textures to be honest....It is documented that memory leaks occur when an incomplete ground texture set is used. GEX may have (i'm hypothesising here) only included a partial set which is fine in other countries but which is only called in NZ/VLC.

timmo:

see my note on 9 november, where i did inactivate the default and vlc libraries, without any effect on the ctds. i am interested in what you said about gex textures. you may be aware of the fact that in connection with either a recent update of gex europe and/or the release of gex atlantic-pacific-tropics, nick needham mentions that some of the new textures may be seen in new zealand and some other countries. i am not sure whether there was some temporal association between the gex releases and the start of the ctds. i do not recall exactly when i began to experience the ctds, but i am reasonably sure they were not present for some time after installed vlc.

Delete all pre FS2004 updated FSX addons ' flashback' ( ie: snowman type librairies ) , they caused a hell of a lotta problems .

Hmm.

Is there a way to disable Gex? If so, I would be interested to see if the problem rears its head with no gex textures present.

The problem is, as far as I know (I don't use it), Gex simply overwrites default textures in the default directory which, if that results in an incomplete set may cause issues.

as far as i know, there is no entry in scenery library, nor any simple disabling procedure. you need to revert to a backup folder of all default textures, and then go through the reverse procedure to restore gex. it sounds to me complicated and dicey. i will try to find out whether anyone has actually done so. do you happen to know nick needham, who is one of the developers of the gex series? he is very active in the gex forums, and often seems willing to give people help and advice. i wonder whether he would be willing to provide you (from 1 developer to another!) with a list of the texture files which are used for new zealand.

Hi guys
Havnt had a chance to do any more testing, but reading the last couple of entries can advise that-
1.NZPM is the default one on my PC
2.Have noticed those default wind generators and did wonder if they could be a problem
3.I dont have GEX but I do have Aimee Leclerqs 30cm rocks and forests and 50cm interzones
Maybe these texture replacements could be doing it?
I wonder if others who have texture replacements are having the same/similar problem.
Although when flying around other world areas eg European Alps (where these textures and a freeware LC for the alps I use make a big visual difference) I havnt had an issue
More food for thought though
PS. Clutching at straws here---My VLC is from a disk.Maybe disk and downloads are behaving differently unsure.gif

GEX Textures are the same as default textures. A simple 682KB DXT1 1024x1024 16bit image, only difference is the view from the cockpit. So fingering GEX is out, they are not .dds files....

Yes you can run GEX and default texture within the sim, for example I have GEX as default world textures, and the stock textures manually installed into a different folder, if a scenery looks like cr@p with GEX for example Aerosofts TahitiX I make a Junction texture folder to point to the defaults as per image.

No need to be sorry, I wish it was the case sad.gif
Will be a bad library file floating around I would say..... "process of elimination for the greater good of the country". Good excuse to tell the wife to justify excess flying hours tongue.gif

Was way ahead of ya on that one Rob, still does its best to hang over the hills, did not crash though there was no fsuipc log enty made, the 2600 just bulldozed its way through. I think the problems Peter is going for mainly point at a series of addons and far too heavy AA settings that should be branded as "OverFlow"

hello again.

i wanted to summarise my followup efforts with the original problem of fsx hangups and crashes related to the vlc scenery. i did a large number of flights covering much of both north and south island. i did find a couple of smalll addon sceneries which seemed to be related to the problem. for example, there were 2 small files ( name, nz towns) from this fellow named michael p (i think), which initially seemed to be related to the napier area crashes, but further testing after their removal showed that the problem was still present. there also was an afcad for nzdn. from the same author, which caused a hang up at dunedin, even without vlc enabled. after removing the rogue nzdn afcad, i have not had a problem approaching dunedin from several different directions. finally, i found that approaching or taking off around whenuapai (for example, approaching from ardmore, o the north or from nzaa) caused a hangup and ctd when vlc was enabled (even after removal of the afcad for nzwp).

i am not sure whether i really understand what is going on. the bottom line is that there appear to be several local nz sceneries which may be conflicting with the vector land class. the major problem appears to be related to the vlc files themselves, because, even when all of the other nz addon sceneries were removed twice by myself, and once by brad [if i remember correctly], the fsx hangups and ctd persist on my installation. i have not found any hangups in nz when the vlc has been disabled. the bottom line appears to be that there may be multiple scenery conflicts, but that in my system the vlc seems to be the central culprit. during all this testing, i have flown extensively in australia, canada and the middle east and tropics,(served by ftx and gex, respectivley) and not found any hanging or ctds. in the event, for me the simplest solution for the moment is to (very reluctantly) give up on vlc and follow any further discussions to see what others can come up with.

i have just noted the most recent comment from rob about the dowson solution for some of the crashes. i have not yet looked into this, but i don't think it can be the sole culprit in my system. when my system does hang up, the hangup is not always recorded as an error in the event viewer. when an error is recorded and a particular file is named, fsx.exe is always listed, sometimes along with terrain.dll. only rarely has the event viewer shown the file cited by peter dowson.

thanks for all the help and suggestions. And thanks to all for the wonderful sceneries, which i will continue to use whenever possible. i intend to continue to fly as much as possible throughout your beautiful country.

I think that by removing those files you are just thinning out the forestry trees, so you might benefit from a thinned-down annotation. What autogen settings do you use? Do you edit your cfg file to increase autogen density?

Ok, there's just a couple of things I want to check out.
Do you have FSX SP1 and SP2 installed?

rob:

i don't know if your question is addressed to roy or to me, so i will just chime in. i have fsx sp1 and sp2 installed, as well as fsx acceleration. i have not tried to remove any of the files within the vlc scenery, other than to disable the mesh scenery folder. i run my autogen at very dense, and i have a customized fsx.cfg.

Sorry, yeah, aimed at Roy. There are a few things which I need to be clear on in his case, which looks like it relates to autogen density.
