Seems to be an uncontained fire in the cargo holds. Without knowing the exact cause of the fire yet, for me it is reason enough to ban lithium ion batteries from ever being carried in the holds of any aircraft. They are unstable and extremely difficult to extinguish and are beyond the cargo fire suppression capabilities of commercial aircraft.
Have a look at the toxic cocktail they were carrying. Aircraft fires can develop so quickly that even with an emergency descent to sea level the aircraft can become uncontrollable.
This, the Swiss Air MD11 off Nova Scotia and the recent DHL 747 crash are all pilots worst nightmares.

Have a look at this. If you have not seen this website before then bookmark it. It is a goody and you would be surprised what finds it's way there and how fast it gets there.

Nail penetration test

Laptop fire move to 2 min mark if you cant wait.

There are many cases of Lipo and Lion batteries becoming unstable and causing havoc. Many are due to charging issues but there are many that just happen spontaneously. HP laptop batteries are a case in point.

Remember the 50-50-90 rule. Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong!

Yes, I cringe at the thought of these going through the mail system and ending up on my aircraft

Yep. Apart from explosive structural failure what could possibly be worse?

I use lipo batteries in my RC car - and I cringe everytime I plug them in for charging.. I figure they are fairly stable in a 'storage' condition new from factory however. But, if something like that was found to have brought a plane down, too right they should be banned from flying.

i just brought some li-po betteries for my rc cars too, and all over them the packaging had do not send by air, i have also noticed that rc battery suppliers have said that they will not send li-pos by air, as said above the biggest problem will be the consumer products, laptops phones etc, funny thing is i didn't know about this accident, haven't heard a thing, makes me wonder if it is going to take a passenger plane to be brought down before anything will happen, rip to the crew, lives lost that more than likley could have been avoided.

In the ongoing battle between objects made of aluminum going hundreds of miles per hour and the ground going zero miles per hour, the ground has yet to lose.
