You're right it is awesome.
And you're right it will get 10 seconds on the news, because it isn't going to destroy the Internet.
In fact I suspect it would be really bad luck to get zapped by a big solar flare - it's got to go off at exactly the right place on the sun's equator, and aim a little ahead of where we are...

Of course we don't need a flare at all, the earth's magnetic field is busy walking away from the poles.
At some point it will flip over as it has done in the past, and then the Internet will be fried due to cosmic radiation getting through!
